Benedict Andrews 5,4 of 10 Star countries=USA, UK duration=102 Min Drama. It is sometimes hard to pinpoint where exactly films fail, the cinematography wasn't bad and you can definitely see that Kristen Stewart tried, but everything else about this film was below mediocre. Characters were one dimensional and lacked any depth, plot development, from the very moment the two main characters meet and then meet again, was abrupt and unbelievable. The other main characters - the good FBI agent vs. the bad one, were just as shallow. Not to mention the wives, whose role never went anywhere and might have as well not been in this film at all.
In the end, it simply wasn't interesting to watch and that is something no amount of blank long gazes and gratuitous nudity can fix.
If you haven't yet, do yourself a favor and watch 'The Lives of Others' a 2006 German film that shares a similar theme but actually does it justice.

When the South American country of San Selva began burning Amazon rain forests, Washington applied pressure to appease popular opinion. But pressure led to attack, and attack led to counter-attack., and soon America found itself in a full-fledged war – against an enemy it was not prepared to fight. Now the stakes are raised and the U. S. Sends Special Forces and Navy SEALs to try to regain the upper hand. As the fires in the rain forests rage out of control, ground troops prepare to go in. What started as politics will have to end on the battlefield. But is this a war anyone can win? And at what cost? Added by 18 of our members The master of international intrigue and explosive action introduces a new hero for a new era of warfare. against a new kind of threat. For years, ex-Navy SEAL Maxwell Moore has worked across the Middle East and behind the scenes for the Special Activities Division of the CIA, making connections, extracting valuable intelligence, and facing off against America's enemies at every turn. When Moore arrives at a rendezvous to take charge of a high-ranking Taliban captive, the meeting takes a horrific turn that neither Moore nor any of his bosses saw coming. Barely surviving, he tries to bring to safety a Pakistani colonel with information about the debacle, only to have that mission fall prey to forces more powerful and cunning than any he has faced before. Undaunted, and with failure not an option, Moore continues his quest for the truth, leaving many dead in his wake-killed by those for whom secrecy is the ultimate weapon. And then. a shocking revelation: Two of the greatest threats to the security of the United States have forged an unholy alliance. After years of planning, the Taliban has come to terms with a vicious Mexican drug cartel for which they will supply opium. For the cartel, it is a matter of money, power, and ultimate control of the drug trade. But for the Taliban, it is an opportunity long awaited: to exploit the cartels and bring the fire of jihad to the hearts of the infidels. It is up to Moore, and his team, to infiltrate and dismantle the drug cartel, even as they hunt for those who would bring the ultimate terror and destruction to the streets of America. In a story that races from the remote, war-scarred landscapes of the Middle East to the blood-soaked chaos of the U. S. -Mexico border, Tom Clancy once again delivers a heart-stopping thriller that is frighteningly close to reality.

Beginning in Haiti in the early sixties, Zombi Child" deals with voodoo and is one of the best and most poetic horror films in many a moon. It is obvious from the title and the setting that we are meant to think of a much earlier film with a similar setting but that would appear to be where the comparisons with Jacques Tourneur's "I Walked with a Zombie" ends for in the next scene we are in comtemporary France and a group of schoolgirls are being taught French history in a very white classroom.
What follows is a deliciously unsettling movie that manages to encompass the pains of teenage romance with a tale of the 'undead' as a metaphor for colonialism and it actually works. I can't think of too many examples in recent cinema where two opposing themes have been as beautifully united as they are here. In some ways it's closer to something like "The Neon Demon" or the recent remake of "Suspiria" than it is to Val Lewton. Here is a film with a creeping sense of dread, we've all seen films in which schoolgirls are not as sweet as they appear to be) and the grand guignol finale is as spooky as a good horror movie should be. It also confirms director Bertrand Bonello as one of the most exciting talents working anywhere today.

Casts Charlie Hunnam; Liked it 4559 vote; user rating 8,9 of 10; Creator Ivan Atkinson; country USA; A British drug lord tries to sell off his highly profitable empire to a dynasty of Oklahoma billionaires. Amazing film. Will be one of the best films this year.

The director goes back to his crime caper roots, firing Matthew McConaughey and Colin Farrell at Downtons Michelle Dockery and a cockney Hugh Grant. Sort that out G uy Ritchie is course-correcting. After spending the last few years churning out largely anonymous big-budget FILM seemingly to order, he has now returned to his roots. The Gentlemen is a Guy Ritchie film in the classic sense, in that it looks like a better-executed version of something that Danny Dyer would have starred in seven or eight years ago. Its a crime caper, its set in London, and it stars everyone. No, really, it stars everyone. And better yet, if the trailer is any indication, everyone gets to do doing something thats differently but equally preposterous. Here, for your pleasure, is a ranking of all them from least preposterous to most. 7. OK, when I said that everyone had been given something to do, I had clearly forgotten about Colin Farrell. Because, unless Im very much mistaken, Guy Ritchie just let Colin Farrell walk on to the set in his own clothes and act as himself using his own accent. I cant say this for a fact, but Id be willing to bet money that Colin Farrell is currently somewhere in the world wearing this exact outfit and pointing at someone in this exact way. Not very preposterous at all. 6. Matthew McConaughey is also in The Gentlemen, filling the role of the Roving American Superstar. Snatch had Brad Pitt. Revolver had Ray Liotta. RocknRolla had, um, Jeremy Piven. And now theres McConaughey. In this regard, his inclusion in the film isnt actually very preposterous at all. However, you will note that in The Gentlemen he appears to be dressed as Guy Ritchie. Its a bit preposterous, but not that preposterous. 5. Henry Golding also stars in The Gentlemen. He isnt given a tremendous amount to do in the trailer, but based on his past work Im going to guess that his character is dead and appears to McConaugheys character as a ghost because McConaughey received his heart after they were both in some sort of tragic Christmas tree accident. Relatively preposterous. 4. Now were getting to the good stuff. Michelle Dockery is here, and at first sight all looks normal. But then she opens her mouth and, well, its hard to say exactly what comes out. She sounds like a TOWIE cast member, had TOWIE been set in a low-security prison. She sounds like shes auditioning for a cartoon about wartime spivs. She sounds like the goblin who lives on Kat Slaters shoulder and advises her in times of moral uncertainty. She sounds like Guy Ritchie told her that hell dock her pay every time she visibly opens her mouth. Its great, but its preposterous. 3. And then Hugh Grant opens his mouth. Now, it is an unarguably good thing that Hugh Grant enjoys acting again. It is an especially good thing that his matinee idol looks have faded enough to allow him to become the character actor he always wanted to be. I have no doubt that the best work of Hugh Grants career hasnt even happened yet. But this is just violently preposterous. Hes got a little beard. Hes got a high-pitched cockney accent. Its as if he was aiming for Ben Kingsley in Sexy Beast but coughed and accidentally ended up hitting David Beckham from 1999. It is preposterous to the Nth degree, and I am kind of here for it. 2. It took me until his name was flashed up on screen to work out that this is Charlie Hunnam. I thought it might have been Nick Frost at first, or Shia LaBeouf, or any number of other people. Now, clearly, he looks preposterous here. But trust me, you could listen to his accent for a thousand years and still not be able to confidently place it. He might be a cockney, or he might be Welsh, or he might be from Liverpool, or he might be from Newcastle, or he might be German. There is honestly no way to tell. Ill assume that its deliberate because, otherwise, yeesh. 1. And finally, the most preposterous of them all, Jeremy Strong as Jeff Goldblum. Incredible.
Snatch and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels are still Guy Ritchies best movies. But The Gentlemen is pretty close to that.
Someone please tell me the name of the drill song in the movie when the boxing lads go to mickeys drug farm.
Edit Storyline Mickey, Raymond and Fletcher are the main three parts of the story. Fletcher who is a dirty private detective who finds dirt on rich powerful people then tries to sell it to the highest bidder. In this instance Fletcher has dirt on Mickey who is the weed Lord of England, but like any very successful man Mickey has a Mrs, Rosalind (Michelle Dockery) so Mickey wants to settle down and sell his drug empire. And this is where the story kicks off there is doublecrosses those attempted murders assassins and a pound of flesh that needs to be claimed all wrapped up in a Guy Ritchie blanket of awesomeness with gunfights car chases and gangsters galore. Jacksfilms called, he wants his forehead back 😂. After watching highly rated films with high quality casts bore the pants off me last year I was wondering what Guy could conjure up and well it was Guy Ritchie at his best with Matthew Mcconnaughey leading the cast Hugh Grant and Colin Farrell putting in stand out performances and the film chugged along with excellent witty dialogue Loved it 💥.

Las Vegas (CNN) — Las Vegas Boulevard. the world-famous Las Vegas Strip. is the central artery of Sin City and the main line to a majority of the city's best sights, gambling, food and fun. 'Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada' sign Brian Jones/Las Vegas News Bureau The iconic "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada" sign serves as Sin City's unofficial welcome mat. This neon beacon has greeted visitors at the south end of Las Vegas Boulevard since 1959, when commercial artist and prolific sign designer Betty Willis designed it as a gift to the city. Because Willis never trademarked her work, merchandising companies have been able to replicate it on t-shirts, mugs and other tchotchkes. The sign was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2009, and it's one of the most popular selfie spots in town. It also served as the site of a makeshift memorial after the mass shooting at a country music concert in October 2017. "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada. sign, Las Vegas Boulevard, South. Luxor Hotel & Casino This 1990s-built pyramid isn't one of the seven wonders of the world, but it stands out in a town where copycatting New York, Paris, Venice and other iconic destinations certainly is a compliment. Inside, guests ride inclinators instead of elevators to their rooms, and people-movers ascend and descend at 39-degree angles along the corners of the pyramid, creating a rocking sensation that makes riders feel like they're on a boat. CinemaCon: The project formerly known as "Toff Guys" will be "vintage Guy Ritchie. stars Charlie Hunnam and Henry Golding promise. For fans of Guy Ritchie s particular brand of action cinema, the news that the “Snatch” and “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels” filmmaker was moving into the live-action Disney remake world with this years “Aladdin” might have been bit worrisome. What about the next “RocknRolla”? Never fear, because Ritchie has already teed up his first post-“Aladdin” film, and if a first look is to be believed, hes back in his classic crime wheelhouse. Previously known as “Toff Guys” and “Bush, ” Ritchies “ The Gentlemen ” will see the British filmmaker teaming up with mini-major STX Entertainment, which showed off a first look at the film during its Tuesday morning CinemaCon presentation. And its vintage Ritchie: a crime thriller with plenty of laughs, a majorly stacked cast, and a few gags that might require a bit of a translation across the pond. The film stars Charlie Hunnam, Hugh Grant, Matthew McConaughey, Colin Farrell, Henry Golding, Jeremy Strong, and Michelle Dockery in a drug-infused, crime-laden tale about a “very British drug lord” intent on selling off his fortune, and having plenty of trouble doing it. The first trailer showed off Ritchies sprawling cast of interconnected characters, all of them dabbling in different bits of the drug trade and having a hell of a time while doing it. While Ritchie was not on hand for the festivities, stars Hunnam (who also starred in Ritchies “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword”) and Golding were in attendance, and they joined STX head Adam Fogelson to chat a bit more about a film that sees fit to return Ritchie to his roots. “When I read the script, its sort of vintage Guy Ritchie, ” Hunnam said. “I grew up on ‘Snatch and ‘Lock, Stock, so when he sent me this script and invited me to be a part of it, I just jumped at the chance. ” Golding echoed that same sentiment, adding, “Hes got such an iconic way about him, he really sort of created a lot of that sort of genre and camera movement. ” One other classic Ritchie-ism also on display in “The Gentlemen”: a real affection for improvisation, collaboration, and sometimes just tossing out the script wholesale. “Hes very sort of immersive in his process, he needs to be there on set with his actors to fully realize, even though hes written the script, to realize what its gonna be, ” Hunnam said. “It evolves very, very rapidly through the course of the day. Its really remarkable to watch him work in real time. Theres many scenes in this film that were excellent on the page, but the entire thing got thrown out in the morning and he just starts writing and we started improvising and playing … and the whole thing has been reimagined. ” Hunnam added, “Its kind of a challenge, as actors, often were very process-oriented, we come with a very clear idea of what we want to do when we arrive. But Guy sort of forces you to be much more fluid, part of that process is what creates the amazing energy that he has in his films. … Theres some sort of weird alchemy to his filmmaking, hes deeply collaborative and allows everybody to imbue the project with their own philosophy, their own worldview, and yet it goes through the Guy Ritchie filter. ” STX Entertainment will release “The Gentlemen” in 2020. Great, another film where Matthew Mcconaughey is playing the same character as his last 40 films. STX Entertainment has released the first trailer for The Gentlemen. This is the latest from Guy Ritchie, who seems to be back to his old ways after having spent the last decade making big studio blockbusters, such as last year's King Arthur: Legend of the Sword and this year's live-action Aladdin remake for Disney. Not to mention his pair of Sherlock Holmes movies, as well as The Man from U. N. C. L. E... Here, the filmmaker has assembled an A-list ensemble, led by Matthew McConaughey, in what looks to be a crime flick in the vein of some of his early works, such as Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Right off the bat, this trailer makes it clear Guy Ritchie is very much back to his old ways. It feels cut from the same cloth as Snatch. What we're seeing here positions this as a criminal power struggle between Matthew McConaughey and Crazy Rich Asians breakout Henry Golding. Lots of drugs, guns, cars and classy outfits. It all gets very violent, and McConaughey gets some one-liners that suit him very well. To ice the cake, it's all set to the tune of Cream's Sunshine of Your Love, which certainly adds a little something to the atmosphere. A poster has also been revealed. Guy Ritchie, who penned the screenplay in addition to directing, took to Twitter to share it, and it's rather simple. We see a glass of whiskey, with a piece of ice shaped like a gun in it set against a pure white background. The impressive cast list is positioned above the glass. I really didn't like the story structure but everything within was decent to really good.

The dialogue of this movie sounds very impressive that it makes me want to watch it. Watch Full Length gospodarstwo. Chybi tam joker🤷🏻‍♀️. Watch Full Length gospodarki. I love how they put a lot of unknown and really small actors in this. Now they can really show how good of actors they are and hopefully get more known. Cause just by looking at the trailer the acting looks good all around. 0:37 At the Cleveland Art Museum's Armoury Room there's a very similar display, but with swords instead of knives.

The Gentleman (real name Babenon Dosal [2] is a Water Genasi [1] crime boss in Zadash, working out of the Evening Nip tavern. As an NPC, The Gentleman/Babenon is played by Matthew Mercer. Description Edit Appearance Edit The Gentleman has light teal skin, a dark goatee, and shoulder length jet-black hair, that forms a widow's peak. He wore a deep-blue coat, and leather gloves. [3] His skin seemed to be perpetually moist, having a layer of condensation on it. [4] Personality Edit The Gentleman oozes confidence and despite inciting fear in many who hear his name he comes off as cheerful and approachable. He has been shown to treat the Mighty Nein with respect and generosity and has proved on several occasions that he sticks to his word. The Gentleman runs his operations in Zadash with a certain amount of meticulousness and places a great deal of importance on luck. During most waking hours, The Gentleman is engaging in deals and revelry in equal measure. Despite his calm, flirtatious and charismatic exterior he is still the head of an extremely dangerous criminal syndicate and quite dangerous. If he believes a group is lying to him, he is more than willing to attack them and sell them into slavery. He is known to be deadly with a rapier, and his reputation alone is enough to keep most onlookers in line. [1] Associates Edit The Gentleman's Troupe: A group of henchmen that work for The Gentleman either freely or as indentured servants. The Mighty Nein Biography Edit Background Edit The Gentleman claimed, when his credentials were questioned, that he had lived and worked in the underbelly of Zadash since 811 P. D. and had never been caught. [5] He later revealed to Jester that he was in fact her father, Babenon Dosal. He had been a merchant sailor out of Feolinn [6] before meeting her mother Marion, but felt himself unworthy of her and left to find fortune. His ship was attacked at sea, and this led to an extended period of time in Darktow. He became a skilled criminal, and when he felt his success brought him unwanted attention from the Plank King, he left to begin his criminal empire in Zadash. " The Gates of Zadash. 2x08) Edit Beauregard stole three packages to Demedan Baumbauch, finding a coded letter about a future shipment from the Gentleman. " Waste and Webs. 2x10) Edit When questioned by Beauregard and Nott, Thed revealed that the way to meet The Gentleman was to offer "many gifts" as payment to Clive Bens at the Evening Nip. " Fleeting Memories. 2x14) Edit Being cautious and fearing being caught, The Gentleman requested that all those who entered his domain leave him with a vial of their blood, which Cree kept in a small leather satchel. This blood was to be a symbol of trust between parties and insurance against anyone who dared betray his friendship, as Cree could use this blood to track down such persons. [7] Wanting to test the group and see if destiny and luck was with his new investment, he proceeded to play a Marquesian card game called the Gambit of Ord against Fjord. [8] The stakes of the game were that should Fjord lose he would have been bound to The Gentleman's service, if Fjord should win business would continue as usual. Starting with a 50gp buy-in, the pot rose to 600gp which Fjord won. [8] Once The Gentleman had insured himself against the group and tested out their luck, he revealed that his organization was a company that specialized in the task and trade that was deemed not the most legal, and that were to some extent restricted by the empire. His group's skills were focused on being deceitful, working fast, and working in the shadows. [9] The Gentleman also revealed that word had reached him of the party's activities at the Sutan residence and at the home of the High-Richter. Specifically, he let the party know that that Lord Sutan was in chains, and that the crownsguard were looking to pin the High-Richter's murder on someone matching Mollymauk's and Beauregard's descriptions, who they saw near the home at the time that she was murdered. [9] Establishing a working friendship, The Gentleman suggested that he had many gifts that he could offer the party including aid in making sure that Lord Sutan stayed locked up, and that the crownsguard investigation would look the other way and drop their investigation of the suspected murderers [10] as well as help to escort Horris safely and secretly out of the city. [11] In return The Gentleman asked that the party perform a task for him. He wished for the party travel around a mile along the underground river pass that his group uses to ship things out to the Ounterloch and Berleben. He wanted the Mighty Nein to go to the area and continue the investigation of an abandoned aged research facility that a previous group had discovered and explored before being beset by Will-o' wisps. They ran away in fear and caved in a portion of the area, noting the location to be filled with a purple light and ancient golden-laden spoils. While there the Mighty Nein were to clear out any dangers, and return with their findings, at which point The Gentleman would graciously let the party keep a portion of the spoils. [12] Fan art of The Gentleman drinking acid, by GalacticJonah. [art 2] Questioning his credentials and ability to clear the group's name of wrongdoing, Nott proposed The Gentleman take a test of her making. Preparing three vials of alcohol, she mixed in some acid into one of them and tasked The Gentleman to carefully identify and drink one of the safe vials. Identifying all of the vials correctly, he confidently took and drank the acid vial. Impressed by his display, Nott drank the alcohol and kept the vials she received from Cree. [13. A Favor in Kind. 2x16) Edit The Gentleman, interrupted from some morning revelry, emerged to greet the Mighty Nein wearing a dark purple silk robe tied around the waist. He was delighted to see that the party was reliable though a little sad that they had returned the next morning, instead of immediately after they cleared out the Abandoned Research Facility. After describing the location, traps, and the monsters they had encountered, the subject moved on to the arrangement of the loot that they were to hand over. Though skeptical of Nott's initial lie about what they had found, he eventually accepted Beau 's lie that Siff Duthar 's research journal, the ancient pots, and the various bits of jewelry were the items of value from the expedition. Following the agreement to split some of the spoils, The Gentleman let the group keep the rings that they had found, and dispatched two members of his troupe to clear Molly, Beau, and Dolan 's name in the matter of Dayana Prucine 's death. Concluding their business, he returned to his chambers to continue his breakfast and his "breakfast. 14] The Gentleman's Path. 2x19) Edit When the Mighty Nein arrived in The Evening Nip to discuss the Gentleman's offer of a job, he presented them with two tasks. If they could handle both and with timely mind, there might be a bonus. Travel northward, to Shadycreek Run to parlay with Ophelia Mardun. Help her in absolving her from her current mire of complications and to return with her to Zadash. For this task completed, He offered an advance of 500 gold pieces and a purse of 4, 500 gold pieces upon returning with Miss Mardun within the month. Locate a fellow named Febron Keyes. Meet with him, secure the safe house in the Labenda Swamp and its contents, and return to me. He offerd a 250 gold piece advance and a purse of 1, 750 gold pieces upon completion. After some deliberation, they accepted both tasks. The Gentleman provided the group two healing potions, a potion to cure diseases, and advances for the two jobs, sending them on the road north to Berleben. " The Journey Home. 2x30) Edit The Mighty Nein brought Ophelia Mardun back to Zadash, finishing both jobs they had accepted from The Gentleman. When The Gentleman saw Ophelia, he kissed her. She kissed him back, but also bit his lip, drawing a little bit of blood. When he realized Molly was missing, The Gentleman told the group he was sorry for their loss. He gave them an additional fifty platinum on top of their payment. The Gentleman offered Caduceus the same deal as the rest of the Mighty Nein: they will kill him or take some of his blood. Caduceus agreed on the condition The Gentleman promised not to cast anything strange on the blood. Before leaving the Evening Nip, Jester and Nott tried a little detective work. Nott wandered over to The Gentleman and tried to subtly drop the names Avantika and "the captain. Nott's name drop was very obvious, but The Gentleman did not pay much attention to Nott. Jester tried to read The Gentleman's reaction, but he was more interested in talking to Ophelia Mardun. [15] Commerce & Chaos. 2x31) Edit " The Ruby and the Sapphire. 2x33) Edit When the Mighty Nein met Marion Lavorre, they realized her description of Jester's father sounded like The Gentleman. Jester cast Sending to ask him if he knew the Ruby of the Sea. After no answer from her first spell, Jester cast Sending again. In response to the second message The Gentleman replied "No, that's preposterous. 16] Agreements. 2x61) Edit Jester casts Sending on The Gentleman, saying, Hi, dad. It's Jester. I know it's been a while since we were in Zadash, but just thinking about you. I miss you. You miss me? After a pause, he responds, You're being ridiculous. I'm not your father. But I'm glad you're all right, wherever you are. Come back some time. I've got more work, more money to be made. 17] Relationships Edit Sorah Edit Sorah is the main bodyguard of The Gentleman and one of his many lovers. Ophelia Mardun Edit The Gentleman and Ophelia appear to be former lovers, as he drew Ophelia in for a passionate kiss when the Mighty Nein brought her to the Evening Nip. They are also long-term business contacts. Jester Edit Fan art of The Gentleman's conversation with Jester, by @hierothraxs. [art 3] Jester suspects that the Gentleman may be her father since her mother had described him as blue and because water Genasi are uncommon on Wildemount. When Jester confronts the Gentleman with her suspicion via sending, he denies knowing her mother. Jester later sends a message to the Gentleman from the Dim's Inn addressing him as "dad" and saying that she misses him. The Gentleman responds that he is not her father but that he is glad she is safe and asks her to come back to Zadash for more work. Jester still appears to believe that the Gentleman is her father, saying that she "talked to dad" in the following message she sends to her mother. When Jester finally speaks to him in person, the Gentleman reveals that he is in fact her father. At least by blood, he does not consider himself her father because he was not there to raise her. He says he did not know of Jester until she walked into his lair. [18] Marion Lavorre Edit Babenon Dosal was once engaged to Marion Lavorre. As a simple merchant sailor, he felt unworthy of her affections and set out to seek his fortune. After his capture and time in Darktow, he felt more unworthy of her than ever. He does not want to drag Marion or Jester into his life of crime. [18] Character Information Edit Abilities Edit Unless otherwise noted, the following abilities are assumed from the standard Dungeons & Dragons materials: Water Genasi Abilities Edit Acid Resistance [19] Amphibious Swim (30 foot swim speed) Call to the Wave Shape Water cantrip Create or Destroy Water spell (as a 2nd-level spell) Notable Items Edit Rapier Quotations Edit "I think I get the gist. Good job. Keep on truckin. His response to Jester's Message) Now, off! I have to finish my breakfast. and my breakfast. " Trivia Edit Jester now knows that Babenon Dosal, her father, is indeed The Gentleman. [2] According to Matt 's notes, there was the possibility that if the Mighty Nein had lied to The Gentleman at any point, he would have attacked them in a furious rage. If the party was defeated, then The Gentleman would have attempted to sell them as slaves to a "Draconian survivor with an anger problem" in Felderwin. Cree would have then freed them as their cart left the outer walls of Zadash. References Edit Art.

Worst filmmaker/ director' since michael bay and shyamalan... December 19, 2019 1:07AM PT Guy Ritchie returns to British gangster terrain for the first time since 2008, but an all-star ensemble can't enliven his stale, sometimes offensive material. It took Guy Ritchie a little over a decade to make the transition from self-styled auteur to journeyman, and his output was hardly worse off for the change. At the turn of the century, he announced himself as the swaggering enfant terrible  of British genre cinema with the sharp Cockney crime pic “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, ” though the law of diminishing returns set in fast: 2008s “RocknRolla” was a tired gangster retread that still marked a step up from the Madonna folly “Swept Away” and the incomprehensible, Kabbalah-inflected “Revolver. ” A reset was called for; slick studio tentpole projects beckoned, ranging from a snazzy “Man from U. N. C. L. E. ” revival to an impersonal but profitable turn in the Disney stable with “Aladdin. ” Its a second phase that has bought enough goodwill for Ritchie to don his tweed auteur flatcap once more. Enter “ The Gentlemen, ” a knockabout all-star return to the underworld that feigns to remind us who its director really is, but feels, in most respects, like a hedging of bets. A blander stylistic exercise than whiplash-inducing early efforts like “Lock, Stock” and “Snatch, ” less ambitious but more cohesive in its structural trickery than “Revolver, ” it would feel like boilerplate Ritchie if he hadnt just spent 11 years away from the genre principally associated with his name. For Ritchie fans not burnt out on the sundry guns-and-geezers imitations spawned by his early successes, then, “ The Gentlemen ” is, in its own way, as much an exercise in cautious nostalgia as any Disney remake, right down to the prominent involvement of revived production company Miramax. The former house of Weinstein even gets an onscreen shoutout — courtesy of the scripts silliest fillip, a movie-within-a-movie plot with little great payoff — that does little to dispel the impression of a film made principally for the amusement of those behind it. A less forgivable blast from the past, however, is a discomfiting strain of racially-based humor running throughout Ritchies original script, making flat punchlines of multiple Asian characters. At such points, “The Gentlemen” leaves cheerfully shopworn territory behind, settling instead for actively retrograde. It begins, as Ritchie films are wont to do, with a literal bang: a flash-forward to smooth American criminal Mickey Pearson ( Matthew McConaughey, accessorised throughout with sparkly ear stud and mile-wide smirk) as he saunters into a London pub, orders a pint and a pickled egg, and promptly gets his brains blown out by an unseen shooter. Or does he? Cue the first of several rewinds and alternative narrative splinters, intended to boggle any brains not still lingering on the peculiarity of someone ordering a pickled egg in 2019. “If you wish to be the king of the jungle, its not enough to act like the king, you must be the king, ” McConaughey purrs, though his introductory voiceover is another bit of misdirection: The bulk of the film, it turns out, is narrated by Fletcher ( Hugh Grant, cast joltingly against type as a working-class rascal) a deviously impartial observer to various East End gangster wars, who has worked them into his own Ritchie-esque screenplay titled “Bush. ” A leading but elusive figure in “The Gentlemen, ” Pearson is the active protagonist of “Bush, ” titled after his roaring trade: a marijuana empire scattered between underground bunkers in various stately homes around the English countryside. A white-trash expat who climbed the British social ladder by dealing to Oxford scholars, Pearson is after his own posh country pile, targeting an early, well-heeled retirement with his wife, street-smart Essex girl Rosalind (Michelle Dockery, a good sport in a role with more outfits than character traits. The word “gentrification” gets bandied about a lot in “The Gentlemen, ” not necessarily with a negative slant: New money is as honorable as old money in Ritchies Britain, just as long as theres a lot of it. But when Pearson looks to cash out his business to fellow Yank Berger (Jeremy Strong, amping up the Kendall Roy skeeziness) his comfy plans are imperilled by a tangled series of bad trades and betrayals — to which Fletcher fancies himself an invaluable witness, turning up at the door of Pearsons dapper right-hand man Raymond ( Charlie Hunnam) with a 20 million blackmail demand. Its an oddly circuitous way of unspooling an otherwise standard-issue dishonor-amongst-thieves plot, much of it relayed by Fletcher to Raymond on the latters backyard patio — a distinctly undynamic setting, and one of several suggestions of a pinched budget here. Occasional digressions into Fletchers fictional screenwriting notions (“Im a storyteller: as they say in the film game, Im laying pipe, ” he leers) add little but self-satisfaction to proceedings, as do stray, strained cinematic references to the old-school value of 35mm lensing and the narrative twistiness of Coppolas “The Conversation. ” (“A bit boring, to be honest, ” Fletcher declares, though in his defense, he hasnt actually seen “The Gentlemen. ”) Its an approach that often leaves Hunnams impassive lackey figure to carry much of the action — which he does, with slightly mournful charm — while his more flavorful superiors recede into the background. Other stars dart in and out of the action at random, inessential intervals. Colin Farrell is amusing as a plaid-tracksuited Irish mentor to a coterie of young thugs (mostly men of color, none with any independent character agency) but is all but dispensable to whatever intrigue there is. British-Malaysian star Henry Golding has the thankless task of heading up a crew of East Asian heroin dealers — the other characters uncertainty over his exact identity is played for a hackneyed laugh — whose interference with Pearsons business seemingly leads the film to the conclusion that American drug lords are somehow more appealingly rogueish than Chinese ones. The actors, splendidly kitted out in autumnal suiting and knitwear by costume designer Michael Wilkinson, have what fun they can with such thin, dated material, but everyone here deserves better: Despite scattered references to grime music and Brexit, “The Gentlemen” carries precious little flavor, either in its quick, choppy craft or its familiarly expletive-laden dialogue, of British life, politics, vernacular or even filmmaking in 2019: Where “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, ” for all its obnoxious, now over-imitated tics, burst onto the U. K. indie scene with genuinely reckless, rebellious energy, this feels as much a mouthy tourist in its modern London as McConaugheys enterprising scumbag. Himself gentrified by a decade in Hollywoods big leagues, Ritchie doesnt much seem to know his own scuzzy world anymore.

I think Collin Farrell should be known as Mr perfectionist. He gets every movie role done perfectly. Coach Carter. The way back Come at me keyboard warriors. 0:53 it's billie eilish. Damn Henry Golding seems to be a hit in Hollywood. How cool to see him cropping up regularly in movies now. Also, Michelle Dockery is such a beauty. If you want to watch this movie coz finally they added an asian male character in a big movie. Don't waste your money and time. In this movie, asian male characters got shot in balls, vomiting and got killed by the main character when he tried to rape a girl. Seriously, all embarrassing and humiliating storylines were given to asian characters. All other white characters are graceful and elegant. They can even run super fast after a car accident... I am not a sensitive asian person who talk about race stereotypes. But this is too much. I live in Melbourne and do you know how many people came here because the asian actor in the crazy rich asian is in it? A lot. His face appears in every poster coz they want to convince asian heritage people to watch this movie. Then, they use stereotypes to build those characters. It is extremely hard for asian male characters to be visible. If you don't want to be inclusive, you don't have to. The worst is to claim that you appreciate inclusive but actually the only thing you care about is money.

Plot [ edit] Big Dave, editor of the Daily Print tabloid, is snubbed by cannabis baron Mickey Pearson at a party and hires private investigator Fletcher to investigate Pearson's links to Lord Pressfield, a minor Royal with a heroin-addicted daughter. Fletcher offers to sell his findings (typed up as a screenplay entitled Bush) to Pearson's right-hand man Raymond for 20 million. Born in poverty in the US, Pearson won a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford University, where he began selling marijuana to privileged fellow students before dropping out and building his empire by violence. He plans to sell his business to American billionaire Matthew Berger for 400 million so he can retire peacefully with his wife Rosalind. Pearson shows Berger one of the labs where he grows his cannabis under the estates of aristocratic landlords, who need cash for the upkeep of their stately homes. Pearson is later approached by Dry Eye, an underboss for Chinese gangster Lord George. Dry Eye offers to buy out Pearson's business, but he refuses. Pearson's lab is then raided by amateur boxers who film their encounter defeating the lab's guards and stealing the marijuana before uploading it online as a rap video. The boxers' coach later orders them to delete the video. Pearson begins transferring his cannabis-growing out of the estates. He also agrees to bring home Pressfield's wayward daughter Laura. Raymond retrieves Laura, however, in a brawl with her room-mates one of Raymond's men accidentally pushes Aslan, a young Russian man, out of the window to his death. Laura later dies of a heroin overdose. Coach visits Raymond, apologizes for his students' actions, and offers his services as penance. Coach has captured Phuc, a henchman of Dry Eye's who had informed Coach's crew about the lab location, although Phuc is accidentally killed during a botched escape attempt. Pearson threatens Lord George for going after his lab, and destroys one of his heroin labs in retaliation. George chastises Dry Eye for his insubordination in attacking Pearson and offering to buy him out; George nods to a henchman to execute Dry Eye, but the man executes George instead. Unknown to Pearson, Dry Eye is in league with Berger, who had wanted Pearson's business disrupted to reduce the price. Dry Eye has taken Lord George's place and still hopes to take Pearson's empire for himself. Dry Eye tries to kidnap Rosalind, who kills Dry Eye's men before she runs out of bullets in her 2-shot derringer. Raymond kills an assassin sent to kill Pearson; the two rush to Rosalind and Pearson kills Dry Eye as he is about to rape Rosalind. Fletcher ends his story and Raymond orders him to leave his house. Fletcher has merely confirmed Pearson's suspicions about the link between Dry Eye and Berger. Raymond orders Coach's students to capture Big Dave. They drug him and film him having sex with a pig, threatening to post it online unless he drops his investigation. Pearson and Berger meet up again in a frozen fish plant, actually a cover for Pearson's European distribution operation. Berger drops his offer to 130 million, but Pearson reveals his knowledge of Berger's plan, shows him Dry Eye's frozen body and tells him he is keeping his business. Pearson forces Berger inside a refrigerator, where he will freeze to death unless he transfers 270 million compensation and, for the assault on Rosalind, cuts "a pound of flesh" from his own body. Fletcher approaches Raymond again for his payment, but Raymond reveals that he was tailing Fletcher all along. The boxers have stolen his stashes of evidence after Raymond placed a tracker on him during their last encounter. Fletcher reveals that he has also sold info to Aslan's father, a Russian oligarch and former KGB agent. The assassin that Raymond earlier killed was one of the Russians. Coach kills two Russian hitmen sent to kill Raymond, while Fletcher escapes in the chaos. Pearson is kidnapped by two other Russians, but they are quickly ambushed by Coach's students who want to "solve Coach's problem. They assault the car with bullets, killing the Russians and allowing Pearson to escape. Later, Fletcher decides to pitch the story as a film to Miramax. After his meeting, he gets into a cab only to realize that Raymond is the driver. Upon learning of Fletcher's capture, Pearson and Rosalind return to their cannabis empire and celebrate in each other's company. I personally prefer JOJ, but I love Alfie. His singing is technically brilliant. Les Mis is in good hands. Following the exciting news that, during the Queen's Theatre refurb, Les Miserables will be continuing at the Gielgud Theatre as an epic concert production, a fantastic cast has been announced to showcase the classic musical in all its glory. From original cast members like Michael Ball, to Les Mis vets and a few other favourites from the barricades to boot, we take you through the cast of Les Miserables: The All-Star Staged Concert. Les Miserables: The All-Star Staged Concert tickets go on sale later today. Michael Ball Michael Ball first appeared in Les Miserables back in 1985 as a member of the original London cast of the musical. He played the role of Marius, the love interest of Cosette in the story. He starred in the Barbican premiere production, and then at the Palace Theatre following the West End transfer. He also performed the musical as part of 'The Dream Cast in Concert' to celebrate the 10 th anniversary of the show in 1995, and a concert performance for the Queen at Windsor Castle in 2004. Ball then starred in the 25 th anniversary concert at The O2 Arena in 2010. He will return to the musical to play the role of Inspector Javert when the Les Miserables concert production opens at the Gielgud Theatre in August. Alfie Boe A regular collaborator with Ball - they have released two albums and toured the UK together - Alfie Boe s history with the show dates back to the O2 Arena concert in 2010, where he performed the role of Jean Valjean. During the encore, he performed “Bring Him Home” as part of the Valjean Quartet alongside Colm Wilkinson, John Owen-Jones and Simon Bowman. Boe was then cast in the West End production of Les Miserables in 2011, playing Valjean. In 2015, he took on the role in the Broadway revival of the musical at the Imperial Theatre. He will be reprising the role once again for the Gielgud concert production (John Owen-Jones will share the role with Boe, see below for more details. ) Carrie Hope Fletcher Carrie Hope Fletcher s career has been littered with appearances in the musical. When she was nine years old, she appeared in the West End production as Young Eponine, and returned to the show in 2013 to take over the role of adult Eponine, making her the only British actor to play both young and older versions of the character. She returns to the musical to play Fantine in the concert production this summer. She recently revealed that across her two runs in the musical she racked up 959 performances, and returning this year means she will break the 1, 000 performances mark. Matt Lucas Actor and comedian Matt Lucas first brush with the musical was also at the O2 Arena concert in 2010, performing the role of Thénardier. He was then cast in the role at the Queens Theatre, alongside Alfie Boe, and played the role for three months. He returns to the musical to reprise the same role in London this summer. John Owen-Jones John Owen-Jones has performed in Les Miz numerous times across his extensive career. He first took over the role of Jean Valjean in 1998 aged 26, making him the youngest actor to play the part. He had previously understudied the roles of the Factory Foreman, Feuilly, Grantaire and Enjolras, and appeared as part of the choir in the 1995 Royal Albert Hall concert. Owen-Jones returned to the London production in 2005 to play Valjean at the Queens Theatre, and went on to play the role on Broadway, and during the 25 th anniversary international tour. John Owen-Jones will play the role of Jean Valjean for three performances a week in the concert production, playing the role on Mondays, Wednesday matinees and Thursdays. Katy Secombe Katy Secombe has performed in the London production of Miz on a number of occasions, playing Madame Thénardier on a number of occasions of the years, including as part of the 30 th anniversary cast. We did enjoy the performance but would not have bought tickets at that price if we had known they were not going to be in it. Booked this when tickets came out on a night Alfie Bow, Michael Ball and Matt Lucas were all performing. Took our seats in the theatre on Friday 21st Nov. The performance started and none of the three were on stage. There was no announcement to say they were all ill. Complaints from all around us. Hundreds complaining afterwards. Really not acceptable. This should have been cancelled and refunds given. Despite having four understudies/alternates it was still as amazing, to say it was a concert I thought the staging was brilliant and added to the event. Went to see the show last evening. I loved it. The whole cast were very talented. I can't wait to go back and see it again The cast where amazing However Id book specifically to see Michael Ball and Alfie Boe. Michael was off due to illness and Alfie didnt do Wednesday afternoons. So although the performances were brilliant we did leave feeling disappointed For Accessibility information please contact 0344 482 5137 Shaftesbury Avenue, London W1D 6AR No refunds or exchanges available after purchase. I love Carrie so much! She is an inspiration. With a cast including Michael Ball, Alfie Boe, Carrie Hope Fletcher and Matt Lucas,  Les Misérables  temporarily transfers to the  Gielgud Theatre for the awe-inspiring Les Misérables: The Staged Concert. Boublil & Schönbergs musical crusade arrives at the Gielgud for a limited sixteen-week run while its London home, The Sondheim Theatre (formerly Queens Theatre) undergoes essential maintenance. The Gielgud Theatre production thus runs from 10 August – 30 November 2019. Slightly different to the production at the Sondheim Theatre, this version of Les Misérables will be a fully-staged concert version of the classic musical. In an intimate setting, a magnificent orchestra of over 65 musicians will be accompanying the actors through the music that conquered the world. This spectacular staging of the legendary Les Misérables concert was previously seen in London at the Royal Albert Hall and the O2 Arena. True to its name, the show features a star-studded cast, many of whom are returning Les Misérables members. This production will feature Michael Ball (Javert) Alfie Boe (Jean Valjean) Carrie Hope Fletcher (Fantine) Matt Lucas (Thénardier) and  Katy Secombe (Madame Thénardier. Former The X Factor star Shan Ako plays Éponine, with West End debutante Lily Kerhoas as Cosette. Also joining the cast for three performances each week in the role of Jean Valjean will be John Owen-Jones (on Monday and Thursday evenings, and Wednesday matinees. No stranger to this story, both Michael Ball and Carrie Hope Fletcher made their West End debuts in Les Misérables. In fact, Michael hasnt performed in this show in over 30 years, having initially started his career by originating the role of  Marius Pontmercy in the shows world premiere. Michael will now be chasing prisoner 24601 in this production, in the role of Javert. Carrie Hope Fletcher is the only actor to have ever played both young and adult versions of Eponine. Carrie went onto to become the longest-ever running Eponine, and also played in the role in a Dubai tour of the show. In this production, Carrie will be dreaming a dream in the role of Fantine. Critically acclaimed singer Alfie Boe will be going up against his friend Michael Ball in this production, as four days a week, hell be performing in the role of  Jean Valjean. Alfie Boe has played this role several times since leaving the Queens Theatre version, including for album recordings, one-off performances and across the globe.  Matt Lucas will also be returning to his original role,  Thénardier, the wicked innkeeper. What started off as a one-off performance in a 25th gala performance for Lucas previously grew to a full-time role in the main production in 2011. Set during the revolution, this international award-winning musical has passion, fear, hope, love and some absolute tunes. The show features iconic music, including, I Dreamed A Dream, On My Own, Do You Hear The People Sing?  One Day More, At The End Of The Day, and the ultimate tear-jerker, Bring Him Home. Based on Victor Hugos immortal novel, Cameron Mackintoshs production of Les Misérables is written by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg. It has music by Schönberg, with lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer. Please note that the restored Sondheim Theatre will reopen on 18 December with the acclaimed New production of Les Misérables, with a new West End cast.

The 25th Anniversary is my favorite cast, almost everyone in it are my favorite for that role. The only one that is not my favorite is Nick Jonas. In my opinion he was great, but I prefer Michael Ball. Les MisÃrables: The Staged concert live. Cameron Mackintosh today (6 February 2019) announces that for 16 weeks only Michael Ball (Javert) Alfie Boe (Jean Valjean) Carrie Hope Fletcher (Fantine) and Matt Lucas (Thénardier) will lead a large cast and orchestra of over sixty-five in the concert version of Les Misérables.   Katy Secombe also joins to play Madame Thénardier and for three performances a week, the role of Jean Valjean will be played by John Owen-Jones.  Further casting will be announced shortly. This spectacular staging of the legendary concert, previously seen in London at the Royal Albert Hall and the O2 Arena, will run from 10 August – 30 November 2019 at the intimate Gielgud Theatre next door to the current home of Les Misérables at the Queens Theatre.  Public booking opens at 12noon (GMT) on Thursday 7 February 2019. Cameron Mackintosh said:  “ The success of Les Misérables continues to amaze me and break new ground.  Despite the fact the show continues to play to 95% capacity we have been obliged to close the production at the Queens Theatre for 16 weeks this Autumn to do much needed includes restoring the ceiling plasterwork and the auditorium, adding many more lavatories, as well as carrying out major renovations backstage, which havent been touched since the 1940s. The theatre was heavily damaged during World War II and has never been properly restored and brought up to modern standards. ” “Les Misérables is the only musical ever that has been equally successful on stage, film, in concert and in the classroom.  Its spectacular staged concerts are legendary successes, just as popular as the stage show.  I am thrilled that the plan to keep Les Misérables running in London with a staged concert version on Shaftesbury Avenue during the enforced closure period has attracted such a stellar cast, with Michael Ball, Alfie Boe, Carrie Hope Fletcher, John Owen Jones, Matt Lucas and Katy Secombe, who all have a very close personal connection to the history of the show. Of course I am a bit miserable that Michael, the gorgeous young actor that created the student Marius in the original production, is now for the first time old enough to play the implacable inspector Javert, an amazing match for Alfies career defining portrayal of Jean Valjean. ” “I know fans are in for a unique and amazing experience from our huge Company who will be performing in the glorious intimate theatrical space of the Gielgud Theatre Produced on stage by Mackintosh, Les Misérables is the worlds longest running musical now in its 34 th year in London.   Its celebrated score includes the songs, I Dreamed a Dream, On My Own, Stars, Bring Him Home, Do You Hear the People Sing? One Day More, Empty Chairs at Empty Tables, Master Of The House and many more.  Produced on screen also by Mackintosh (along with Working Title and Universal) Les Misérables is now the most successful movie of an ‘original stage musical. The Original London production currently at the Queens Theatre (following runs at the Barbican and the Palace Theatre) will play until 13 July 2019 when the theatre will then close for four months of rebuilding work both backstage and in the auditorium as well as adding many much-needed new lavatories to the front of house.  This work will also restore architect W. G. Spragues original boxes and loges which, along with the entire front of house, were destroyed by a bomb in 1940 and caused the theatre to be closed for 20 years.  The restored Queens Theatre will reopen in December of 2019 with a new production of Les Misérables continuing its phenomenal run indefinitely, with a new West End company being put together now. The new production of Les Misérables, with a separate company, is currently on a record-breaking international tour, sold out a year in advance through to January 2020 which has now been extended to Autumn 2021.  Box office for the additional dates will open shortly.

Afterward Download torrentz. @pabischoff UPDATED: January 2, 2020 Three questions Im often asked are: Is torrenting safe, is torrenting legal, and what happens if I get caught? This post answers those questions and looks at the methods torrenters use to stay safe and anonymous. Torrenting safety and legality: In short Is torrenting legal or illegal? Torrenting itself isnt illegal, but downloading unsanctioned copyrighted material is. Its not always immediately apparent which content is legal to torrent and which isnt. Some fall in a gray area, so you may find yourself unwittingly on the wrong side of the law. Your internet service provider (ISP) and copyright trolls monitoring the BitTorrent network can take action if they catch you illegally torrenting. This can range from a warning letter and throttling (slowing down) of your internet connection to legal action – although the latter is increasingly rare. Privacy-conscious torrenters will use VPNs, or virtual private networks, to keep their internet activity hidden from their ISP. With a wide range of applications, some VPNs are better suited for torrenting than others. If you want to keep your ISP from snooping on your activity, choose a VPN that: a) doesnt keep a log of your activity, b) isnt based in a country where the legal system can be used to demand customer records, and c) is fast enough that it wont slow downloads. Weve rounded up the providers that fit these criteria and others in our list of the best  torrenting VPN  services. How to torrent safely It is relatively simple to torrent safely and keep your online activity private. Note that while a VPN will keep your activity private and safe from prying eyes you may still be susceptible to malware from some torrent sites. Follow these 5 steps to torrent privately with a VPN. Heres how to torrent safely: Download and install a VPN matching the criteria mentioned above. We recommend ExpressVPN. Enable your VPNs kill switch, if it has one (ExpressVPN calls this a “network lock”) Connect to a VPN server, preferably in a P2P-friendly country Once the connection is established, open your torrent client and start downloading as usual Your online activity is now encrypted by your VPN Torrenting without a VPN Torrenting without a VPN means your internet service provider (ISP) can see your online activity including the sites you visit and the content you view. In certain countries, including the US, ISPs are allowed to share this information with third parties. A VPN will keep your online activity private from your ISP. Is uTorrent safe? uTorrent is the official torrent client from the creators of the BitTorrent protocol. It is proprietary—not open source—software maintained by a legal US company. Like BitTorrent, the uTorrent software itself is legal, although it can be used for piracy. The official uTorrent is free of malware and can be used safely and privately in combination with a VPN. It does not, however, prevent users from downloading malicious files that can infect their device. In detail The BitTorrent protocol rose to become the most popular medium for peer-to-peer filesharing the world after the demise of centralized services like Napster and Limewire. Unlike those services, torrenting is almost completely decentralized save for the trackers that allow users to search and download torrent files and magnet links. Torrent files and magnet links are used to find other users on the network who host the desired file or files but do not actually host those files for downloading. Is BitTorrent safe and legal? The BitTorrent protocol is not in itself illegal or unsafe. It is just the means to share any type of file, and plenty of legal torrenting services do exist. The most popular trackers, such as ThePirateBay and KickassTorrents, however, operate in a legal grey area, offering users free access to copyrighted content. Sharing and downloading copyrighted content by BitTorrent, or other means, is illegal in many countries and can be unsafe since sites including KickassTorrents have been shown to host malware. These trackers would argue that they simply find and organize information that is already out there, and they do not illegally host any copyrighted content on their own servers. Just like the BitTorrent protocol itself, they are the means to an end. Not everyone is convinced. Major trackers have come under heavy legal scrutiny from content creators and distributors who argue the trackers enable and encourage theft. The blame ultimately shifts to the users, the millions of individuals who host files on their personal computers, downloading and uploading movies, games, software, music, ebooks, and more. Users connected to the same tracker are called peers, and they fall into two categories. A leech uses a torrent file or magnet link to download the file from other users on the network who already have the file. These users who already have the file are called seeds. When a leech is finished downloading a file (or even just part of a file) he or she becomes a seed, allowing other leeches to download the file from his or her computer. As a general rule, its considered proper pirate etiquette to seed as much as you leech. Comparitech does not condone or encourage any violation of copyright restrictions. Please consider the law, victims, and risks of piracy before downloading copyrighted material without permission. Legally speaking, seeding and leeching copyrighted material fall into different criminal categories. Think of it like buying illegal drugs: purchasing the drugs for personal use is definitely a crime, but a relatively minor one. Turning around and selling those drugs to others is a much more serious offense. Finding the original source of the drugs, or in this case the HD rip of the new Avengers movie, would be the best case scenario for law enforcement, but that isnt always possible. The trackers act as the shady back alley marketplaces where all of these transactions go down, but they dont personally handle any of the drugs. What happens if you are caught torrenting? Prosecution of torrent users has been sporadic. The chances of actually going to court or having to pay a settlement are pretty slim, but the penalties can be extremely high. The frequency of copyright holders suing torrenters for piracy peaked in the late 2000s. Pirates were sued for wildly disproportionate amounts of money, and most settled out of court. These public scare tactics shone poorly on the recording and movie industries because they were portrayed as petty millionaires bullying poor college students. Direct lawsuits are much less common these days, but the campaign against torrenters is far from over. Copyright trolls Now the job of going after individual pirates has been outsourced to a growing number of small businesses known as copyright trolls. These companies locate torrenters who illegally download copyrighted content through their IP addresses. They then approach the copyright holders and sign a deal that lets them take legal action on their behalf. Others are hired directly by Hollywood production companies to sniff out pirates. With legal leverage and a list of names, the copyright trolls then go after torrenters via mail, email, or even by going door to door and handing out settlement letters. These letters are not legally binding documents or injunctions. Copyright trolls use intimidation, fear, and shame to make torrenters pay without ever going to court. A common tactic is to threaten to sue for over 100, 000 but only ask for 3, 000 or so in the settlement. That makes the 3, 000 look like a good deal, but going to court is costly and risky for them, so dont give in if you receive such a letter. What to do if you receive a settlement letter The most common way to receive a settlement letter is through your internet service provider. A copyright troll will go through the court system to subpoena your ISP and force it to email customers with a legal threat and hand over personal details. According to US law, an IP address is not a person. If you were contacted through your ISP, chances are thats because the copyright troll doesnt know your actual identity yet. If the letter doesnt contain any identifying information on you, keep it that way and do nothing. Your case could be dismissed prior to the date that your ISP is set to reveal your personal details to the troll. If you respond and identify yourself, that gives the troll a more direct means of targeting you. This is a game of probability for copyright trolls. If they send out 1, 000 threatening emails and 50 people reply, they only need a handful to actually cough up money to make it worth their time. Chances are its more cost effective for them to move on to the next swarm of torrenters than pursue the remaining 950 people. If things escalate and you decide to take action, lawyer up. Heres a list of attorneys compiled by the Electronic Frontier Foundation that specialize in these sorts of cases. ISP penalties Depending on your ISP, it may take actions against you on its own behalf. That could mean throttling your internet connection or threatening to hand over personal details to a copyright troll. Why does your ISP even care? Because torrenting takes up a lot of bandwidth, and that bandwidth costs ISPs money. On top of that, an ISP could be receiving kickbacks from content owners and their associates. How to protect yourself To avoid any legal ramifications, its best to simply not torrent. However, if you insist on torrenting, take the time to protect your privacy and keep copyright trolls at bay. Use a VPN when torrenting The best way to torrent safely is by using a VPN. A VPN accomplishes two things: first, it re-routes all your internet traffic through a server in a location of your choosing, which changes your IP address to one used by hundreds or thousands of other people (assuming your VPN uses shared IP addresses, which most do. This adds a significant layer of anonymity and makes it much more difficult for anyone to track you. Second, a VPN encrypts all your traffic before it leaves your computer. That means your ISP cannot monitor your activity, nor can anyone else. And because all your traffic heads to the VPN server first, ISPs cant even tell where its going. Using a quality VPN is key; dont settle for a “free” service or VPNs that log your activity, cap your bandwidth and data, or dont provide sufficient DNS leak protection. Not all VPNs tolerate torrenting. You can check out our list of the best VPNs for torrenting here, which are services with fast speeds and a focus on privacy,  security and anonymity like ExpressVPN,   IPVanish and NordVPN, among others. Other alternatives If you dont want to pay for a VPN, you might be considering Tor. Tor is similar to a VPN in that it routes your traffic through several volunteer “nodes” while encrypting traffic. We recommend a VPN over Tor for a couple reasons. First, Tor is slow, and usually best for simple browsing and other low-bandwidth activity. Second, connecting to Tor could actually draw more attention from your ISP and law enforcement, as its a well-known tool for hackers and criminals. Another popular app among torrenters is Peerblock. Peerblock is a desktop firewall with a regularly updated blacklist of IP addresses. These IP addresses belong to entities that try to track your activity online, especially on peer-to-peer networks. Unfortunately, the blacklist is only updated once upon installation. After that, users must pay to keep them updated. Even if youre willing to pay, its unlikely that the blacklist could contain every possible IP address for copyright trolls, universities, and law enforcement. A copyright troll just needs to connect to the swarm–all the devices connected to a single torrent–with an IP that isnt on that blacklist to get your IP address. Usenet Instead of torrenting, another alternative is Usenet. Usenet is a paid service-usually between 10 and 20 per month–where you download files from centralized servers instead of a network of peers. Usenet downloads are much, much faster; often as fast as your ISP can handle. Usenet is more private as well. The connections take place between you and the providers servers, and the best providers offer an SSL-encrypted connection. Some even throw in VPNs for good measure. Torrents, on the other hand, require that you share at least some identifying information in order to connect to the tracker and peers. Finally, downloading a Usenet file doesnt mean you have to seed it for other users afterward. Legally, this makes you less of a target because youre not supplying strangers with copyrighted content, at the same time consuming fewer computer resources and internet bandwidth. Usenet providers make files available for a certain number of days. How many depends on the provider, but the standard is 1, 200 days after the original posting. Until that time is up, users have full access to that file. Torrents only stay up as long as people seed the file. Weve rounded up some of the best Usenet providers here. Public vs private trackers A “tracker” is like a search engine that indexes files on the BitTorrent network. Trackers can be private or public, and the former usually requires an invitation from an existing member. ThePirateBay, KickassTorrents, and Demonoid are all examples of public trackers. Anyone can just go to their respective websites and search without logging in or requiring any sort of authentication. Likewise, anyone can upload files for others to download. These uploads are not moderated, so users must judge whether a download is safe and accurate based on comments and the reputation of the uploader. Private trackers are more exclusive both in terms of who can upload and who can download within a group. They vary wildly in terms of content and quality, but many members of private trackers attest that they have higher quality files, faster downloads, longer retention, and an overall more consistent and safe experience. The law views private trackers the same as public trackers. Piracy is piracy whether you do it in public or within a private group. Streaming vs torrenting Many people have moved away from downloading entire files through BitTorrent and opt instead to stream content either on their web browsers or through customized programs like Kodi. When it comes to safety and the law, whats the difference? Legally speaking, youre probably still breaking the law when you stream copyrighted content from a pirated source. However, this depends largely on your country. In the UK, its outright illegal. In India, a court ruled that it is absolutely not illegal. In the US, its still a grey area, as theres been no precedent of anyone being convicted for piracy after streaming a copyrighted video from an unsanctioned source. Those who upload the videos without compensating or asking permission from the copyright holder do so illegally. Thats pretty much standard no matter where you are. Not only do laws tend to be more lenient toward streaming, its also more difficult for copyright trolls and law enforcement to catch users in the act. When you download a torrent, you can see the IP addresses of everyone else youre uploading to or downloading from. But streaming transmits a video directly from a website to your device, with no third parties involved. Dont get too comfortable, however, as there are still risks. The website could be logging IP addresses or other information about its users, which it could then hand over to law enforcement or a copyright troll. Your ISP could monitor your activity and see that you are watching pirated content. These are risks that can mitigated by connecting to a reputable VPN. When it comes to security, streaming carries just as many risks as torrenting. Websites that stream pirated content tend to be chock full of intrusive ads, malware, and phishing threats. Kodi users are subject to man-in-the-middle (MITM) attacks and other threats from the add-ons they download. More tips As a rule of thumb, avoid downloading movies that were released on DVD and Blu-Ray in the past 60 days, especially big-hit blockbusters. Thats when movies make the vast majority of their post-box office money, after which their income significantly drops off. Copyright holders will put most of their anti-piracy resources into going after torrenters of new releases to minimize the financial damage. The same goes for TV shows and video games. Users of Popcorn Time, the free movie-streaming app, should tread just as carefully as torrenters. Many Popcorn Time users dont realize that the app actually streams directly from torrents and will even seed a file so it is uploaded to other users. All the risks associated with Popcorn Time apply in equal measure to torrenting. That means Popcorn Time users should also use a VPN. Choose your torrents wisely. The most popular torrents on ThePirateBay and KickassTorrents are probably the ones being most closely monitored by copyright trolls. However, dont pick totally unpopular ones either. Read through the comments section, where users often run virus scans on downloads and post the results. They will also give you a general review of the quality. Even if the comments are positive, run your own virus scans as well. Ideally, use multiple antivirus programs to run an array of scans, as each of their virus libraries can differ. Not all antivirus programs play nice with each other, however, so mixing two or more must be done with care. We recommend Bitdefender to scan all downloads before opening. This is especially important when downloading games and software, which are often “cracked” by the uploader. Cracks make it easier to bypass DRM schemes that validate content with the publisher, but they also make it easier to distribute hidden malware, spyware, and viruses. Check out Comparitechs antivirus reviews section here.

I've just started using µTorrent few days ago and that makes me a huge µTorrent noob. I've been using BitComet for years and I'm used to queuing torrent files and they are downloaded one by one. I mean after the download is completed the next file's download start automatically. Is it possible to do so with µTorrent? I have a slow internet that's why I like to download files one by one. µTorrent is just amazing in every way, this is the only thing bothering me. What should I do to make this work? Thanks in advance. ❤️❤️❤️❤️. Congratulations Ada, that bag is beautiful! I 💗 the color. Love the gift they gave you.

Afterward Download torrent download. Depending on how you use uTorrent, especially how much you download with it, you may have encountered situations where you had to leave the PC while downloads were not completed yet. Maybe you had to go to work or school, or to bed late at night. You then had to choose between keeping the PC running to continue to download from the Internet, or shut it down and continue in the morning if that is possible. Keeping the PC turned on may be a good choice, but it may have the result that the PC will still be turned on after all downloads have finished. That's not only wasting energy but may also be problematic as someone else could access the PC in the meantime, especially if you are not out of home. Shutting the PC down while downloads are still running on the other hand means that you will have to continue the next time you start the PC up. While that may not be a big issue, as time is not critical usually when it comes to downloads, it sometimes may be, for instance if downloads are limited. The uTorrent client has its own auto-shutdown feature that can be overlooked easily. When I first started to look for it, I went through all the preferences in hope of finding it. It was later that I discovered the auto shutdown option under Options in the menu. The developers of the program have added quite a few shutdown options to uTorrent: You can quit the program itself. You can change the power state to hibernate, standby, reboot. You can shutdown the entire PC. The program distinguishes between downloads and everything as you can see from the screenshot above. Downloads refers to all torrent files that you are downloading, while everything includes torrents that you are seeding. Simply select one of the available options. It is then highlighted by the program here, so that you know what will happen when downloads or uploads & downloads complete in the client. You can use it for a couple of things. First, you can configure uTorrent to quit when all downloads complete. This prevents further sharing. Another option that you have is to configure the program to shut down your entire PC after downloads completes. This is ideal if you need downloads to finish while you need to go to bed, work or school. Advertisement.

Afterward Download. If I have multiple downloads I can have them all download simultaneously or pause one and let the other download and then when the 1st is done I manually pause it and have the second download, afterward I let both seed for a while. But How can I set it so that the 2nd torrent will start downloading only after the 1st has finished. And is it possible to have the 1st pause seeding after it has finished downloading. I have nothing against seeding but I want to wait till all my downloads are done before sole seeding. If these things aren't possible in uTorrent is there another client that handles these things? Do i have to stay connected to a VPN while a torrent is downloading? — PIA Hello, I'm wondering if i have to stay connected to a VPN while i am downloading a torrent, or just when i go on PirateBay and start the download? Comments Why turn it off? Nowadays many standard ISP plans use CGNAT which means that lots of people have the >same ip at the same time, so can't keep track of torrents downloaded. This is because of the impending problem of IPv4 addresses running out, many ISPs have started to look into using Carrier-Grade Network Translation (CGNAT. Unlike sharing a single IP address at home using a router, CGNAT is implemented at the ISP level. This enables to the ISP to share one IP address among many customers, rather than the current model where each household (ISP account) is You just need to start the download with the help of a VPN. No need to keep it activated after that. However, if you constantly encounter websites that require you to seek VPN, then get any one thats available for free. FalcoVPN is recent and pretty good example of that. It gets the job done and is available for free. To get it visit this link Wrong. Dangerous. Spam. A torrent client continually looks for new connections. You'd bet your ass you need to keep the VPN connected. Some of you guys are really so stupid - do any of you have common-sense? Of course you have to stay connected, just as you need to keep the tap running if you want water! LOL indeed. though it might cause speed congestion! I was completely wrong on the notion that a vpn can be switched off once the download starts. Spoke to my brother on it and he said whatever the case just keep it on. yeah obviously. How can it be turned off? It has to be on. Exactly. Connections are constantly completed and new connections are made on any P2P file. It's not about stupidity or common sense the reason he asked was because it may be affecting his download speed so don't go jumping to conclusions im sure a lot of people are wondering this there are a lot of people new to this kind of stuff and it's not as obvious as u say u just know it already adn think u always have since u were born and have already done the research honestly it would be stupid not to ask and it's common sense to ask these things not to know them already. Next time if you don't have anything nice to say don't say it at all just stfu and crawl back in your hole if your're gonna be like that people like u make me sick when u talk like that I shit on ur face to that comment just go home bitch (see how does that feel not really nice is it when you're mean to people) Next time when people ask for help, actually help them in a positive way and don't be a dick about it, that guy could have down syndrome for all you know either way it's no way to talk to people who are seeking help! Axemwa, please be aware that language and abusive behavior are precisely what PiaVipper, the user your post was directed to, was ultimately banned for.  Your post is also abusive and thus in violation of our terms of service. Consider this your first warning. In actual fact, those saying that you have to stay connected to the VPN are wrong.  I checked this today, I started downloading torrents that I can't get in my country without a VPN but was working on a project where I required a faster speed than what the VPN had so I had to turn the VPN off forgetting to pause the torrents to go back to downloading later.  Bittorrent continued working on in the background & I was surprised to see the torrents fully downloaded yet I wasn't connected to my VPN.  Weird I k now, maybe the torrent download goes somewhere & you can keep on accessing it without the VPN, who knows but it worked! The only reason this works is likely because using the VPN lets you access the torrent tracker site to get the initial download information and peer information. Once you have a list of peers to download from, it's very unlikely your ISP would block those IPs since they are mostly other residential users and not big servers. So you can download from those without the VPN. This is a very bad idea however, unless you only care about bypassing the censorship. It works, but when you disconnect you reestablish your P2P connections to the peer list you already have  and your ISP can see all of it. That's why it's faster, you don't have the VPN overhead and download from your normal connection. It is kinda lame if people get butt-hurt but its also sorta the point of forums like this to hopefully find out information you don't understand yet or need more of. I for instance didn't know if say; I start a VPN, connect and start a torrent transfer, am I now in the clear and could turn it off because the "cloak was up. But even just from reading the responses here I found the answer I needed which is cool. Good looks to the very savvy, and cheers to the beginner trying to do learn how to do it right. For the record, I've had a lot of success tracking my ul/dl situation and removing files from downloadable status when I didn't have VPN access. As the "outbound" sharing is the thing they snag you for (at least I understand in the US) you CAN get away like that for a bit although you start to appear rather greedy. Works in a pinch though. If youre not outputting, you're not doing the thing wrong That They Look For. -Bobby-Digital That would be awesome if someone could answer this properly. When downloading bit torrents. If you download a movie using a VPN through Android phone while using cellular data. Than delete the seed and delete the bittorrent app now having the movie downloaded on my phone. Star - Rafe Spall. 1883 votes. Countries - USA. Drama. . brief - A powerful and thought-provoking true-story, "Just Mercy" follows young lawyer Bryan Stevenson (Jordan) and his history-making battle for justice. After graduating from Harvard, Bryan might have had his pick of lucrative jobs. Instead, he heads to Alabama to defend those wrongly condemned, with the support of local advocate Eva Ansley (Larson.) One of his first, and most incendiary, cases is that of Walter McMillian (Foxx,) who, in 1987, was sentenced to die for the notorious murder of an 18-year-old girl, despite a preponderance of evidence proving his innocence and the fact that the only testimony against him came from a criminal with a motive to lie. In the years that follow, Bryan becomes embroiled in a labyrinth of legal and political maneuverings and overt and unabashed racism as he fights for Walter, and others like him, with the odds-and the system-stacked against them.

Just mercy trailer. Just mercy bande annonce vf. Dont know why this film has a low rating.
This true story about a young lawyer who uncovers miscarriages of justice a from discriminating legal system in the deep south, it has a great central performance by Michael B Jordan and is backed up by Jamie Foxx, who surely should be nominated for a best supporting actor Oscar come next year. Just mercy pdf. Just mercy release date. Just mercy corps.

"Each of us is more than the worst thing we've ever done."
Bryan Stevenson, Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption
Attorney Bryan Stevenson (Michael B. Jordan) is the model of perseverance as he defends in the late '80's Walter McMillian, a black man in Alabama (To Kill a Mockingbird's Monroeville, ironic enough) over corrupt murder charges. Although the arc of defense is usually the same in reality as well as this drama, Just Mercy, each incident will hit fair minded audiences in the gut each time.
Director Dustin Daniel Cretton keeps the pace of Bryan's investigation apace, from the early days as a new Harvard trained lawyer to the journey to the Alabama Supreme Court and back. During that time the audience gets a stark reminder that standing up against bigotry and corruption (Alabama cops do not come off like justice driven officer) as Stevenson does is not for the weak, but definitely for those who seek justice, especially for underserved minorities.
Although Walter having been unjustly convicted is established early on, it's the undoing of that conviction (Walter is awaiting his execution date) that provides suspense, with multiple incidents of denial in the court system. Meanwhile Stevenson (he wrote the account on which the film is based) gives a few too many Hollywood-like speeches about the prejudice that allows an innocent man to lose part or all of his life fighting a system that caters to the wealthy and the white.
The strength of this predictable drama, unavoidable given the story is based on a real drama that is replayed in courtrooms daily, and it seems in the South more often than normal, is the depiction of helplessness for the unjustly convicted and the efficacy of tenaciousness joined to truth. The corrosion of justice and the heroism of humane people is on display and a reminder that never giving up is the antidote to hopelessness.
Hope is the dominant motif of Just Mercy, and it's just and merciful.

Exactly. It may be a straightforward film with a simplistic "racism is bad" message, but that actually works well with audiences. It's well made with popular actors (Michael B Jordan, Jamie Foxx, Brie Larson) and reviews are decent, so it could very well win the People's Choice Award at TIFF, which often goes to crowdpleasers. And unlike Green Book, it won't face the criticism of focusing on the white character and sidelining the African American character (it's more like Hidden Figures in that regard of focusing on the African American charcaters. And presumably the lead actor, director, and writer won't be caught saying the n word or being exposed for past poor behavior. This could do quite well and end up with a handful of Oscar nominations, because most people can get on board with it.

Was Bryan Stevenson really strip-searched? Was the judge really named “Robert E. Lee”? We break down the new movie. Michael B. Jordan as Bryan Stevenson in Just Mercy beside the real Bryan Stevenson. Photo illustration by Slate. Photos by Warner Bros. and Brad Barket/Getty Images for POLITICO. Just Mercy, director Destin Daniel Crettons adaptation of Bryan Stevensons 2014 memoir, is about the exoneration of Walter McMillian, a black man who spent nearly six years on Alabamas death row after being convicted of a murder he didnt commit. The film is about inertia as much as anything: When Stevenson looks into McMillians case, it is immediately apparent he had nothing to do with the crime, but it still takes years to clear his name, simply because the gears of justice have started grinding. Just Mercy is structured like a standard legal thriller—secrets uncovered, wrongs righted, justice done, and so on—with one exception, which is that no one is punished in the end. The murder remains unsolved to this day, and the people who ruined McMillians life prospered in the aftermath. McMillians prosecution and exoneration have been the subject of two books: Circumstantial Evidence: Death, Life, and Justice in a Southern Town, a 1995 true crime book about the murder by journalist Pete Earley, and Stevensons memoir, also called Just Mercy, which is structured around the McMillian case but also covers the early years of the Equal Justice Initiative. We consulted both of those books, contemporary news reports, and court documents to sort out whats true and whats artistic license in the new movie. Walter McMillian (Jamie Foxx) Jamie Foxx as Walter McMillian in Just Mercy, JAKE GILES NETTER/Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. Walter McMillians ordeal is more or less accurately portrayed in Just Mercy: He was arrested in 1987 and charged with the murder of Ronda Morrison, an 18-year-old white woman who was shot in broad daylight at the Monroeville, Alabama dry-cleaning shop where she worked. McMillian was convicted after a trial that lasted only a day and a half. An overwhelmingly white jury sentenced him to life in prison, but the judge overrode the jury and condemned him to die. Attorney Bryan Stevenson took McMillians case in 1988, and in 1993 secured McMillians freedom after demonstrating that the prosecution had withheld evidence and pressured their star witness into lying. For a thumbnail sketch of the facts, heres the 60 Minutes report about McMillians case that is featured in the movie. It aired on Nov. 22, 1992, and if that seems like a long time ago, it was the middle segment in an episode that also featured Woody Allen defending himself against molestation charges and a piece about a grassroots anti-deficit group that was coincidentally funded by a private equity billionaire, so how long ago could it have been? Besides McMillian, the segment features the real Bryan Stevenson (Michael B. Jordan) the real Ralph Myers (Tim Blake Nelson) the real Tommy Chapman (Rafe Spall) and a pantheon of the films minor characters. Also featured: death row at Holman Prison, meticulously recreated in the movie, plus a news report about McMillians exoneration. Just Mercy s McMillian corresponds pretty closely to the man depicted in both the 60 Minutes segment and Stevensons memoir, but its perhaps worth noting that Earleys book is a little harsher on him, alleging that—although rumors during the trial that McMillian was a player in the Dixie mafia were nonsense—he really was a small-time marijuana dealer, whod been investigated by both the Alabama Bureau of Investigation and local police, for whatever thats worth. Earley also sniffs at Stevenson sanding off his clients rougher edges at a prayer breakfast at Montgomerys AME church shortly after McMillian was freed: …[Stevenson] spoke passionately, without notes, about how politics, racial bias, and money all corrupt the justice system. Much of this talk was about Johnny D. There was no mention of marijuana, no talk about an affair with Karen Kelly or weekends spent at nightclubs. But every source agrees about one thing: McMillian had nothing to do with the murder of Ronda Morison. In any event, if the film version of Just Mercy underplays the slightly disreputable things McMillian may have done before being railroaded, it also underplays the horror of what was done to him. Being on death row was a constant nightmare in which even small gestures of rebellion—its an Alabama prison tradition to bang cups on the bars during an execution—bring no comfort. “We were all banging on the bars to protest, to make ourselves feel better, but really it just made me sick, ” McMillian said about one execution during his time there. Even being completely exonerated didnt end the torment the state of Alabama caused him. The films closing chyron notes that McMillian died in 2013 after suffering from early-onset dementia and that “his years on death row weighed heavily on him till the end. ” You have to go to Stevensons book to figure out what that meant in practical terms, but it is awful. Heres Stevensons account of a conversation he had with McMillian in the common room of a nursing home he was staying in, years after hed been completely exonerated: “Well, it looks like Im back here, ” [McMillian] said with a heavy sigh. “They done put me back on death row. ” … “Walter, this isnt the row. You havent been feeling well, and so youre here so you can get better. This is a hospital. ” “Theyve got me again, and youve got to help me. ” He was starting to panic, and I wasnt sure what to do. Then he stared crying. “Please get me out of here. Please? Theyre going to execute me for no good reason, and I dont want to die in no electric chair. ” He was crying now with a forcefulness that alarmed me. When McMillian died, the Monroe Journal —a newspaper whose vitriolic coverage of his trial and its aftermath is well documented in both books—ran an obituary that did not mention his trial. Bryan Stevenson (Michael B. Jordan) Just Mercy follows Stevensons self-portrait in his memoir very closely. The real Stevenson, circa 1992, is heavily featured in the 60 Minutes segment above. For an introduction to what hes like today, here is his 2012 TED Talk. The differences between Stevenson in the film and Stevenson in his memoir are mostly matters of dramatic compression: anecdotes Stevenson tells about other cases he handled are moved to the McMillian case, which saves the movie the time and trouble of explaining five or six different unjust criminal trials. For example, the movie features a white prison guard (Hayes Mercure) who initially forces Stevenson to strip search before meeting with a client. Over the course of the movie, the guard has a quiet change of heart while observing Stevenson at work and life on death row, which is dramatized by improved treatment of Stevenson and McMillian both. In the memoir, this happens while meeting with a different client at a different prison, and the guards change of heart comes after hearing Stevenson testify about the horrible abuse his client suffered in the foster care system, because the guard was also a former foster kid. Meanwhile, an incident in which the police pulled their weapons on Stevenson for sitting in his car outside of his apartment in Atlanta is relocated to a traffic stop in Alabama—although the bomb threats and general creepiness from the locals are mentioned in both books. Finally, in real life, Stevenson isnt quite as good-looking as Michael B. Jordan, but few people are. Eva Ansley (Brie Larson) Brie Larson as Eva Ansley Courtesy Warner Bros. Pictures Brie Larson plays Eva Ansley, who in real life co-founded the Equal Justice Initiative with Stevenson and currently serves as its operations director. Larson explained why she found Ansley inspirational at this years Variety Power of Women event, then brought her out on stage to talk about her work: In the 1980s, Ansley was running a project pairing condemned men with lawyers in Alabama while Stevenson was doing similar work at the Southern Prisoners Defense Committee. In 1988, they secured federal funding to set up the nonprofit that eventually became the Equal Justice Initiative. The scene in the movie in which Ansley chews out a landlord for refusing to rent them office space because of their work doesnt come from Stevensons book, but he does note that the University of Alabama School of Law had promised them office space, then backed out of the deal. (In the screenplay, the location is identified as an officie building in Montgomery, so the landlord is not a stand-in for University of Alabama officials: The school is in Tuscaloosa. But judging from Stevensons memoir, Larsons performance is true to life. Ralph Myers (Tim Blake Nelson) Tim Blake Nelson as Ralph Myers in Just Mercy Ralph Myers, the career criminal who testified that Walter McMillian killed Ronda Morrison, only to recant the entire story years later at Stevensons prodding, really did the things hes shown doing in the movie. As you can see in the 60 Minutes clip, Tim Blake Nelsons performance eerily recreates Myers tics and delivery, while Just Mercy s makeup team recreate the injuries Myers suffered in a childhood fire. He had the fire-related phobias youd expect, and really was moved to death row when he stopped cooperating with the police. Circumstantial Evidence goes much deeper into Myers ties to the other people involved in the case, but Just Mercy gets the details pertinent to McMillians fight for freedom right. His testimony at McMillians first trial was a ridiculous story that was impossible to reconcile with the physical evidence. It nevertheless got McMillian sentenced to death. Similarly, there really was a recording of Myers insisting he knew nothing about the murder, and the prosecution really didnt turn it over to the defense, and his testimony, which nearly got Walter McMillian killed, really was that absurd on its face. Herbert Richardson (Rob Morgan) Warner Bros. Rob Morgan as Herbert Richardson in Just Mercy. Herbert Richardson, the Vietnam veteran whose execution Stevenson attends after failing to save him from the death penalty, was a real client, but the movie doesnt dwell on how he got there. In real life, Richardson had psychological problems from his combat experiences—he was the only survivor of an ambush that killed his entire platoon—and ended up in a Veterans Affairs hospital in New York after the war. He moved to Alabama to follow a nurse he had met at the hospital, dated her, and was happy, for a time. But after the couple broke up, Richardson decided the best way to win her back was to plant a bomb on her porch, then save her from it. Unfortunately, the womans 10-year-old niece picked up the bomb and was killed instantly in the ensuing blast. There are other aspects of Richardsons story where the film diverges from Stevensons book. In the movie, Richardson tells the Army to send the flag from his funeral to Stevenson, because he was “the only one who cared enough to fight for me. ” In real life, Richardson got married while in prison, and, according to Just Mercy, kept bugging Stevenson to make sure the military sent his flag to his new wifes address. He did really play “The Old Rugged Cross” over the prison P. A. system on the night of his execution, though. Tom Chapman (Rafe Spall) Rafe Spall as Tom Chapman in Just Mercy. Tom Chapman, the prosecutor who did the most to fight McMillians release, seems to have behaved even more badly in real life than he does in Just Mercy. The film traces his journey from indifference to McMillians case—he wasnt the original prosecutor—to fanatical opposition to McMillians release, to grudging acceptance of McMillians innocence in exactly the same way the book does, and Chapman really did all those things. He arrested and indicted one of Stevensons witnesses for perjury after the witness came forward with exculpatory evidence, then dropped the charges when Stevenson pointed out they were obviously an intimidation tactic. He really gave that heartless 60 Minutes interview. Then he really joined the defenses motion to have all charges dropped. But neither version of Just Mercy captures the level of animosity Chapman felt for Stevenson that Circumstantial Evidence describes, nor his description of their first meeting, from the same book: Stevenson didnt know me or anything about me, and yet he comes in here and he has this attitude of “Im a Harvard-educated lawyer and Im going to come down here and tell these honkies how to do their job. … Well, Im just as smart as that guy, even if I didnt go to Harvard. And just because we dont see things eye to eye doesnt mean that Im not a moral person. What right did he have to come lecture me about morals? For his part, Stevenson was apparently even less of a fan of Chapmans in real life than he appears to be in either version of Just Mercy. In their very first phone conversation, Chapman said hed tell Judge Key to give him a fair shake the next time he saw him at a restaurant where they both ate; Stevenson later told Earley, “I could just see Pearson and Judge Key eating dinner together at the local country club. Two white good old boys deciding how justice would be dispensed in Monroe County. ” But the biggest thing missing from Just Mercy s portrait of Chapman is his relationship to the press. Except for 60 Minutes and a constant scrum of reporters outside the courthouse, the media is mostly absent from this story about someone being railroaded—for a movie with the exact opposite problem, see Richard Jewell —and thats a shame, because Chapman spent almost the entire process complaining to the Monroe Journal about the case. The morning after his disastrous 60 Minutes interview aired, Chapman told the paper, “For them to hold themselves up as a reputable news show is beyond belief and irresponsible. ” Sheriff Thomas Tate In the movies scene in which Tate arrests McMillian, he taunts him by saying things like, “Those rims look like they cost you a pretty penny—whove you been working for? ” Thats shitty, but in Walter McMillians version of the story, as reported in court filings, Tate said much worse: “He said he was going to stop us niggers from fucking these white women himself. He told me he was going to stop that. ” And then Tate said, according to McMillian, “I ought to take you off and hang you like we done that nigger in Mobile, but we cant stand that suit. ” Tate has categorically denied saying any of this. Whats not in dispute is that he arranged McMillians arrest rather differently than it appears in the film. Tate couldnt charge Walter McMillian with the murder of Ronda Morrison on the basis of Ralph Myers testimony alone, but Myers say-so was enough to arrest him on a sodomy charge. So thats what Tate went with, after a search of McMillians truck yielded no marijuana—although he had to explain to Walter what the word “sodomy” meant. Crucially, Tate arrested McMillian in his truck, which gave him a pretext to drive the truck to the police station—Tate drove it personally—which made it possible to have a prisoner who said he knew something about the case see the truck and positively identify it as the one he claimed hed seen outside the cleaners around the time of the shooting, which gave Tate the minimum number of witnesses hed need to charge McMillian with Morrisons murder. Neat! And way too complex to try to fit into a movie that already makes the point that McMillian was railroaded in a billion other ways. Earley goes into more detail about the political pressures Tate and Chapman were under, but the circumstances under which McMillian ended up in prison were even dodgier than they appear in the movie. Tate was also responsible for the scene in which McMillians son Johnny is tackled by deputies in the courtroom. The incident actually happened during the reading of the initial guilty verdict, before Stevenson was involved, and Earley and Stevenson dont agree about all the facts—Stevenson has the courtroom tackle, Earley has Sheriff Tate issuing an arrest warrant for Johnny afterwards and making his mom drive him back to court be booked—but in both versions, Tate claimed Johnny said something along the lines of “Somebodys going to pay for what theyve done to my father. ” Tate also seems to have been the government official who was most reluctant to accept that McMillian was innocent, even after he was finally released from prison. After the Alabama Bureau of Investigation reopened the Morrison case, independently investigated, and failed to find any evidence at all that McMillian had anything to do with the murder, Tate was still going around saying things like, “It seems to me that we had a pretty airtight case until those two ABI boys pulled into town. ” Naturally, Tates behavior crippled his career in Alabama law enforcement, and—wait, he actually remained the sheriff of Monroe County until 2018, when he decided not to seek re-election because of his age. Hed made the national news again that February, when it emerged that hed pocketed more than 110, 000 in funds the state paid him to feed inmates, the beneficiary of an old Alabama law that allowed sheriffs to keep any excess money they didnt spend on prison food. Faced with public approbation, Tate told the Monroe Journal, “It hurts my feelings to be accused of doing something wrong. ” The Judges The judge at McMillians criminal trial—the one who decided that the death penalty was more appropriate than the life sentence the jury had decided on—really was named Robert E. Lee Key, Jr., and really did describe the crime as “ the vicious and brutal killing of a young lady in the first full flower of adulthood. ” Not too surprisingly, McMillians case is not the only stain on his record: In 1999, the U. S. Supreme Court decided to let the State of Alabama execute a man named Brian Baldwin. Baldwin was prosecuted by Theodore Pearson, the same D. as McMillian, in a case overseen by Key in which Pearson called the defendant, who was black, “that savage, ” Key called the defendant “boy, ” black jurors were systematically excluded, and Key was asked to adjudicate whether or not his own behavior had been racist. (He decided it was not, and Baldwin has been dead for 20 years now. ) But for all the harm Key did, he wasnt the most frustrating judge in the McMillian affair. In the movie, the hearing in which Stevenson submits the overwhelming evidence that McMillian was innocent is referred to as “Judge Foster, ” played by Lindsay Ayliffe, looking as much like Jeff Sessions as possible. That hearing was actually overseen by Judge Thomas B. Norton Jr., and Judge Fosters most ludicrous-seeming dialogue is actually taken straight from an order Judge Norton wrote saying that he had no reason to believe Myers had perjured himself during the original trial. The only judge who comes out of the movie (or the books about the real-life McMillian case) without looking terrible is Judge Pamela Baschab (played by Rhoda Griffis in the movie) who issued the order that finally freed McMillian. She retired in 2008.

Just mercy box office. Odie Henderson December 23, 2019 “Just Mercy” has the misfortune of hitting theaters at the same time as “ Clemency, ” a more daring and better film set on a prisons Death Row. Though the lead characters differ in intent— Michael B. Jordan s activist Bryan Stevenson is trying to get prisoners off the row while Alfre Woodard s warden Bernadine Williams oversees their executions—the two actors each have moments of stillness where they seem to physically vibrate from the internal trauma theyre suppressing. This is built into Woodards character intrinsically, but for Jordan, it feels more like an actor doing his best to rise above the paper-thin characterization he has been given. Stevenson is so noble and flawless that hes a credible bore unless you focus on Jordans physicality. You look into his eyes and see him trying to play something the films cautious tone wont allow: a sense of Black rage. Advertisement Since the days of '50s-era message pictures, the majority of films about African-American suffering have always been calibrated the way “Just Mercy” is, with an eye to not offending White viewers with anything remotely resembling Black anger. We can be beaten, raped, enslaved, shot for no reason by police, victimized by a justice system rigged to disfavor us or any other number of real-world things that can befall us, yet God help us if a character is pissed off about this. Instead, we get to be noble, to hold on to His unchanging hand while that tireless Black lady goes “hmmm-HMMMMM! ” on the soundtrack to symbolize our suffering. Theres a lot of “hmmm-HMMMMM”-ing in this movie, so much so that I had to resist laughing. These clichés are overused to the point of madness. Between this, the equally lackluster “ Harriet ” and the abysmal “ The Best of Enemies, ” that poor womans lips must be damn tired from all that humming. Movies like “Just Mercy” spoon-feed everything to the viewer in easily digestible chunks that assume you know nothing, or worse, dont know any better. They believe that, to win the hearts and minds of racists, you cant depict any complexity lest you ruin the “teachable moment” the film is supposed to be presenting. Its unfortunate that these teachable moments are so often delivered in the exact same, tired manner, as if they were meant for people who are perpetually having to repeat the same grade. Making matters worse, the White perpetrators of injustice are so often one-note villains that they allow for plausible deniability by the viewer: “I cant be racist because Im nowhere near as bad as THAT guy! ” Granted, this is a period piece true story and the film cant bend its real-life people too deeply into dramatic license, but director and co-writer Destin Daniel Cretton applies a way-too-familiar formula to their personalities. Despite my complaints, I have some admiration for how much “Just Mercy” is willing to interrogate. Its a lot, and I feel some commendation is in order for bringing these issues up at all. Adapting Stevensons memoir, Cretton and his co-writer Andrew Lanham touch upon activists for Death Row prisoners, the value of White lives vs. Black lives, veterans whose PTSD is left unchecked, corrupt law officials, justice system imbalances and, in a subplot anchored by Tim Blake Nelson, the idea that poor people are victimized by law enforcement regardless of what color the impoverished person is. I remember watching the “60 Minutes” profile re-created here, where Stevenson takes the case of Walter McMillian ( Jamie Foxx) to the public. McMillian was on Death Row for a crime he swore he didnt commit, the death of a young White woman. Despite having 17 witnesses vouching for his whereabouts at the time of the murder, an Alabama jury of 11 White men and one Black man convicted McMillian based on the testimony of an ex-con named Ralph Meyers (Nelson. Stevenson took his case to the CBS airwaves after his successful attempt to get McMillians case reopened ended with a judge named after Robert E. Lee discarding Myers admission that hed lied under oath in the first trial. All of this is completely believable in reality, but here, both the corrupt Sheriff Tate ( Michael Harding) and the district attorney are depicted as cartoon villains acting alone rather than in service to a far more racist and corrupt system. You have to wait until midway through the closing credits to discover that Tate was re-elected multiple times after his role in McMillians railroading was exposed. I should mention that this case took place in Monroeville, Alabama, also known as the home of “ To Kill a Mockingbird ” author Harper Lee. I bring up Lee because her book, and its subsequent cinematic adaptation, are ground zero for all the aggravating clichés I mentioned above. So its no coincidence that “Just Mercy” plugs Michael B. Jordan into the Atticus Finch role. Like Gregory Peck in that immortal performance, Jordan has presence, idealism and righteousness on his side. Whats missing is the commanding sense of authority Peck brought to the part, which isnt Jordans fault at all. Stevenson is a somewhat naïve Yankee from Delaware trying to navigate the ways of the Deep South; Finch was an Alabama native with a paternal glow. As Stevensons co-worker Eva, Brie Larson reteams with her “ Short Term 12 ” director but is given little to do other than to be threatened once she re-opens McMillians case. Still, she milks a lot of character out of the simple act of smoking a cigarette. Foxxs McMillian is written in a similarly flat manner, but he shines in his few scenes with fellow Death Row inmate Herbert Richardson ( Rob Morgan. Richardsons arc is the one truly successful element of “Just Mercy, ” and Morgans excellent, heartbreaking performance is being unfairly overshadowed by Foxxs this awards season. A Vietnam vet with severe PTSD, Richardson caused the death of a young girl when a bomb he planted on her porch exploded. Unlike McMillian, Richardson is guilty of the crime and believes he belongs on Death Row. He was unable to get help for his mental issues before he committed his crime, and the prosecutor withheld this information during the trial. Morgan shades his small part with such beautiful, subtle gestures that he becomes the only character who feels fleshed out, complex and real. You feel not only his sense of guilt but the demons that infected his brain during combat. His last, horrific scene is so well acted that it still haunts me; its the only time the viewer is forced to be uncomfortably conflicted, to think about the complicated nature of injustice. I wish the rest of “Just Mercy” had that level of jarring complexity instead of relying on easy tropes to deliver its message. Reveal Comments comments powered by.

After graduating from Harvard, Bryan might have had his pick of lucrative jobs. Instead, he heads to Alabama to defend those wrongly condemned, with the support of local advocate Eva Ansley (Larson. One of his first, and most incendiary, cases is that of Walter McMillian (Foxx. who, in 1987, was sentenced to die for the notorious murder of an 18-year-old girl, despite a preponderance of evidence proving his innocence and the fact that the only testimony against him came from a criminal with a motive to lie. In the years that follow, Bryan becomes embroiled in a labyrinth of legal and political maneuverings and overt and unabashed racism as he fights for Walter, and others like him, with the odds-and the system-stacked against them. Though larger than life, Atticus exists only in fiction. Bryan Stevenson, however, is very much alive and doing God's work fighting for the poor, the oppressed, the voiceless, the vulnerable, the outcast, and those with no hope. Just Mercy is his inspiring and powerful story. Re-read. This time via audio. Bryan Stevenson is in the Netflix documentary the 13th. I just watched it. I highly recommend it! I'm late to the party so there is not much for me to say about this book that has not already been said. What I will say is that This is a Very Important Book! If you have not read it you must. It should be required reading for high school. I had no idea the injustice that occurred in this country when it came to death row. I live in a state in which the death penalty... UPDATE. Theirs were exciting times. Women won the right to vote, slaves were freed, and medical advancements were plenty. It was the time of The Industrial Revolution, electricity, the telephone, planes, trains, and automobiles so to speak. I tend to downplay the important breakthroughs of my life and times, Television, Computers, a second industrial revolution of Technology... 4 stars! What a powerful and inspiring book! Please note, if this was a review of the author, Bryan Stevenson's, career and life story, my rating would be 5+ stars. Words cannot adequately describe how I feel about this selfless man who has spent his career fighting for justice for those who need it most. My rating of 4 stars is simply my review of this book (which is obviously what this site is about. My impression of and respect for Bryan Stevenson as an individual is extremely high and would... Well, I suspect it'll drag you kicking and screaming from your happy place, but I defy you to read Bryan Stevenson's remarkable Just Mercy and not come away affected in some way. If you are at all interested in racial and/or sociopolitical injustice, specifically as it applies to our country's (and more specifically, my adoptive home state, Alabama's) seriously flawed justice and penal systems, this is the book for you. Absolutely haunting, heartbreaking, and unforgettable. “Mercy is just when it is rooted in hopefulness and freely given. ” Let me be honest. I would never have picked this book to read on my own. But it was my church book club selection. This is a powerful, scary book. A young black lawyer takes on death penalty appeal cases in Alabama. And he does this because Alabama didnt provide public defenders for those appeal cases. The book delves into all the aspects of the legal system. It also speaks poignantly on the effects of the larger community when... With all the recent protests across the nation, sparked by the high-profile deaths of several unarmed black men, this is an incredibly timely read. This book is an account of the author, Bryan Stevenson, and his life calling. Stevenson first began helping death row prisoners, mostly black, who had had no legal defense of any kind. He discovered there were thousands who were completely innocent. This led him to start an organization called the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) which is still going... Highly recommended reading for anyone interested in the U. S. justice system (or curious about why some people dont feel they receive equal treatment under the law. In Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption, Bryan Stevenson presents what could be dry statistics or empty outrages as stories about real people. However, these stories arent just about people, but the towns and cities where horrible crimes were committed (sparking cries for justice) and the flawed mechanisms we have for... We never read anything in a vacuum. Every book is filtered through the lens of experience, history and daily life. It may have been a coincidence that I read Just Mercy only days after a horrific mass shooting at a historic black church in Charleston, South Carolina, but it didn't feel like chance. Having such fresh evidence of racism and violence in the South made the events discussed in this book all the more real. Bryan Stevenson is a lawyer in Alabama who works to defend the poor and the... There is nothing I can write to do justice to this exceptional book. Really, the only thing to say is "Read it. But here are a few thoughts: Just Mercy is both horrifying and awe inspiring. I listened to the audio of Just Mercy as read by the author, Bryan Stevenson. I listened to it in 40 minute daily increments as I walked to work or for exercise. Each time I had to turn the audio off, I found it hard to disengage from everything Stevenson has to say about his work as the founder of the... Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption "I…believe that in many parts of this country, and certainly in many parts of this globe, that the opposite of poverty is not wealth… I actually think, in too many places, the opposite of poverty is justice… Ultimately, you judge the character of a society, not by how they treat their rich and the powerful and the privileged, but by how they treat the poor, the condemned, the incarcerated. Because it's in that nexus that we actually begin to... Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson is a 2014 Spiegel & Grau publication. This book came to my attention from a couple of Goodreads friends. Their amazing reviews convinced me this book was one I should, and needed, to read. “We have a choice. We can embrace our humanness, which means embracing our broken natures and the compassion that remains our best hope of healing. Or we can deny our brokenness, forswear compassion, and, as a result, deny our own humanity” This man. Bryan Stevenson. Are there... The Force of Forked Lightning Author and civil rights lawyer Bryan Stevenson has some hard bark on him: for dozens of years now, traveling into the backwater towns of Alabama (and other places in the South) to defend and save the lives of inmates, many of whom were railroaded onto death row. He centers his soul-sparking memoir on the especially egregious case of Walter McMillian in Monroe County, AL, interspersed with brief sketches of examples nationwide proving particular types of injustices in... Just Mercy was heartbreaking and inspiring at the same time. I felt a wide range of emotions while reading it, including sadness, anger, and frustration. I knew our system is broken but I wasn't aware to what extent. It was infuriating to read how far behind the times some states are, most notably, Alabama. Before reading this book, I was fairly confident in my views re: the death penalty, and punishments by imprisonment in general. This book changed my views on some things. Bryan Stevenson is a... Excellent! Especially for readers who care about social justice, inequality in the justice system or abolishing the death penalty. It is already abstractly known that minorities, poor people, mentally disabled and un-parented children are disproportionately represented in the criminal justice system and Bryan Stevenson gives us an up-close and personal look at many of these people. Judges, police, prosecutors, jailers, politicians, etc. can be very obtuse and uncaring about them and are given... This book will make your blood boil. While I would have preferred some more nuance in this work (the author cherry picks the most outrageous examples of injustice and the most compelling inmates to argue his cause, understandably so, the majority of us don't possess the amount of empathy Bryan has for people, even the most despicable ones) what Stevenson has done throughout his career to make our world a little bit less awful and a little bit more just, is no less than heroic. His work is hard... Harrowing, but brilliantly done. "Capital punishment means them without the capital get the punishment. I discovered this book, Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption, on display in my local public library and there was something about the title which implored me to pick it up. I had never heard the name Bryan Stevenson before picking up this book and I wasn't aware of the Equal Justice Initiative, a legal practice he had started to defend the most vulnerable and desperate in our society. Now, Bryan Stevenson is someone... An absolute must-read book for anyone interested in the integrity of the justice system in the U. This book will make you cry, seethe, and grab everyone you know by their lapels and say to them, Do you know this is happenening. How can this be. The author is an attorney and founder of the Equal Justice Initiative. The book highlights several cases of people wrongly imprisoned, and sentenced to death, for crimes they clearly did not commit. In other cases, while crimes were committed... “… the death penalty is not about whether people deserve to die for the crimes they commit. The real question of capital punishment in this country is, Do we deserve to kill? ” Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption chronicles the founding, growth, and work of the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI. EJI is “a private, nonprofit that provides legal representation to indigent defendants and prisoners who have been denied fair and just treatment in the legal system. We litigate on behalf of... Content Warning: This is a dark review of a very dark subject. Reader discretion is advised. Joe Sullivan was thirteen years old when he was arrested. Mentally disabled, neglected and abused, the product of a chaotic home, Joe could barely read at a first grade level and grew up mostly on the streets. You cannot defend condemned people without being broken. Bryan Stevenson Eye-opening, heart-wrenching nonfiction account that tore me apart. The above quotes sum it up. There's nothing else to say. We are all broken people. This is a great read to pair with the fictional book The Enchanted. This may need to be a reread... 5 For the book and for the author in recognition of his incredible work on behalf of those wrongly convicted to death or life in prison caught up in a system of blind justice and no hope. Read by the author, this was compelling from start to finish and deserving of all the recognition and awards. I had no idea, really. All emotions possible will hit the reader; consciousness will be raised. The film version has an expected U. release in January 2020 but read it first... Overall, the lessons to be learned in this book are shattering. Prisons in the United States are an apparatus for stigmatizing and exiling those who we were once told would be rehabilitated. Then there are the innocent ones who have been tried, found guilty and sentenced to death. Bryan Stevenson writes of his transformation from fear to courage and commitment as a young lawyer to come to their defense. He writes of the legacy of racism and other constructs of power and privilege that continue... There is definitely something amiss with my view of crime. I read crime mysteries and police procedurals for pleasure, but reading about crime from the other side—innocence and guilt or suspects and law or the possibility that the criminal justice system can be wrong—makes me anxious and fretful. I dont like crime. It seems like weakness. What I have come to see is that crime can occur on either side of a prosecution or conviction: the accused can be guilty of weakness or legal counsel can be... This is a must read book for anyone interested in and/or concerned about the American system of justice. I always intended to write a full review of this book but instead have decided to provide a link to a review written by a Goodreads friend. I hope you will read this. This is a book which deserves to be read at a time when issues of justice are on every thinking person's mind. Justice must be served "justly" or our system simply will not work. Our system... When I first encountered Bryan Stevenson, I was in the middle of tearing pages out of Smithsonian Magazine. Before any reading material made it to my students at the state juvenile correctional facility, I first had to remove any questionable content. Smithsonian was generally safe, but I was quickly drawn into a story profiling Stevenson and Why Mass Incarceration Defines Us As a Society. After finishing the story myself, I made sure it found its way to as many of my students as possible. I... This is just an awesome story of a lawyer who made it his lifes work to fight for the underdog and do all he can to get them justice. He started a non-profit legal office in Alabama to help people in need of serious legal help like those facing execution, the wrongly convicted, teens sentenced to die in prison and others. He spends long hours working, searching for funding, visiting prisoners, and working on cases. After you get so far in the book, you can see why its won several awards, and...

Just mercy trailer movie. Just mercy cast. Just mercy true story. Just mercy chapter summaries. We saw 1917 last night, and I was so excited to see it. I was so disappointed! First off, I will say the cinematography was amazing and the visuals were about the only good thing of the movie. But for me, the horrible, over the top acting overshadowed what the filmmaker set out to create. Also, it was so far fetched and Unrealistic that I was too annoyed to even enjoy this movie... in fact we giggled thru the whole film at all the ridiculous scenarios... These are some of them When the German underground cave crumbles on top the guy, and his buddy has to dig him out of the rocks and boulders, and pretty much thinks hes a goners. he doesnt have a scratch or cut on his face. WTF? Seriously, if youve ever been hit on the head or face with a rock, let alone an entire cave, there is a shit ton of blood... and this guys face was unscathed? In fact, the whole movie... not even a scratch on his pretty face. When he crosses the downed bridge after leaving the huge group of army comrades and is being shot at by the Germans. not one of those trucks full of men and guns waited to see if he got across the bridge safely. they didnt see the shots being fired at their buddy that they just travelled miles for in the back of a truck... they hear shots being fired and are like ‘ah, hell be fine, lets keep moving Or how about when hes running thru that blown up village and meets the French woman, how many people were shooting at him, and not one German landed a shot? Just keep running buddy, theyll never get you... man, he could have been the in the matrix And lastly, when he falls down the river, unscathed again, and lands at the bottom of the waterfall and comes into the flower petals and trees. He just so happens to meet up at the concert in the park, and not one person sees him coming? Or he has no idea what battalion or war troupe (my war lingo isnt the best) he has stumbled upon? And the acting is just sooo bad throughout the movie. or maybe its the way the camera panned in on their faces to try and seep emotion on to the screen... I just thought it was so cheesy. In fact, the group of 4 of us who saw the movie all felt the same way. I would not recommend this movie, and am blown away that is up for best film... to me, it just shows how out of touch Hollywood is with the real world.

This is a really good film went into it not knowing much about the story in real life but it surprised me and gripped me. I would recommend this film as it keeps you gripped and routing for the main Jamie fox all the way through.
