Alright... of all the concepts I've thought up over the course of my life, this is possibly the most taxing and frankly bold creations I've cobbled together, taking a huge milestone in not only Resident Evil, but gaming history as a whole, and completely changing it to something that (Possibly) stays closer to "Survival Horror" then the current version is a ballsy endeavor, even if its just a "Fan Idea", but I'm doing it anyways because I'm a sodding madman. Maybe you'll enjoy the thought of a different RE4, maybe you'll want to crucify me for even daring to suggest this game be different from what we have now. Either way... just note this isn't and likely never will be real, its just the ramblings of an RE Fan with WAY too much time on their hands. The Spoiler Tag is obvious, I'm going to be going into quite a bit of RE4's Plot here, even though its overall events and game structure are going to be altered. In other words, quite a bit of mid/late game stuff is going to be spoiled here if you haven't played the game yet, so you have been warned. Phase 1: Changes to the Core Game. Main Characters: Already I'm going to be making a pretty big alteration, Leon S. Kennedy does not show up in this version. Kindly put down the Rocket Launchers folks, I'll explain why in a bit. Instead, our Male Lead is the charismatic Spaniard, Luis Sera, only in this continuity, he's still working in the Spanish Police instead of being, in his own words, "Just a good for nothing guy, who happens to be quite the lady's man. " he isn't a researcher for Saddler that went rogue this time around and he also never struck a deal with Wesker to get him a Plaga sample, he's just an honest cop looking for a missing girl that ended up at the wrong place at the wrong time Ashley Graham is still around, but this time as the Playable Female Lead and NOT an annoying as all hell escort. The manner of how she ends up here this time is, instead of getting kidnapped by Krauser (I'll get to him later... ) and being held hostage for roughly 3 weeks, she was going on a vacation to Spain with some collage friends and then the Los Illuminados make their move, herding her towards the more rural parts of the country where they are based. Luis' initial involvement in all this as a result is that his squad gets a call that the U. S. President's Daughter of all people just went missing and that all available units needed to start searching immediately. The Reason I'm leaving Leon out is because this whole idea spawned as a result of RE2: Remake "somewhat" creating a new continuity, assuming Leon and Claire don't let the government take Sherry and try to take down Umbrella together, Leon really has no reason to go to Spain when Umbrella is dead at the time RE4 takes place. But just to be on the safe side, I added in the detail of Ashley's disappearance happening within a rather short time frame of Luis arriving on the scene of the game's Intro, so even if Capcom does end up Remaking RE4 and stick to their guns with keeping the continuity as is, the incident of Ashley's disappearance will be far too recent for Leon to be informed and do anything about it by the time the game ends. Gameplay: Control Wise, this version of the game uses the control scheme and mechanics of RE2: Remake, an over the shoulder camera, a much more limited Inventory, invisible HP that's displayed in said inventory as "Fine, Caution or Danger", Key Items and even Treasures will be stored in that Inventory, Item Boxes will now be present in close proximity to most Typewriters and function the way they always have. On the Harder difficulties, Saves will require Ink Ribbons, Knives have a durability meter, grenades can be used as Defensive tools (As well as knives) to break grabs, which also means you can't escape a Grab by waggling the Control Stick and finally, the "Aim Steadying" mechanic where if you stand still for a moment while aiming your gun, your character will more accurately line up their shot, increasing its Damage and Crit Chance. The Merchant: It just wouldn't be RE4 without this Strangah, but the way he is treated as a feature is going to be much different. Firstly, he no longer sells you New Guns or upgrades the stats of the ones you have via Pesetas, instead, he sells you Ammo, Sub-Weapons, Healing Items and Gun Attachments/Upgrades in exchange for Treasures. Said Treasures will take up space in your inventory and are split up into 2 Categories "Common" and "Rare". Common Treasures are the often plentiful Spinels, Velvet Blues and Emeralds littered about the Game and are exchanged for Ammo, Knives, Grenades and Healing Items, though Ammunition for Stronger Guns, the stronger Grenades and the More Potent Healing Items like Red Herbs and First Aid Sprays will require more of these little beauties to purchase them. You can even trade them in for Treasure Maps of the General Area you're currently in to help you seek out the much more valuable Rare Treasures, but at the obvious cost that you might not be able to afford Emergency Ammo or Healing later on. Rare Treasures are pretty much anything in the original RE4 where the Merchant said "Ah... I'll buy it at a High Price. " if you sold it to him, this time around they're used to buy much more valuable and Permanent Upgrades such as Hip Pouches to Extend your Inventory and Attachments for your Guns that improve their Performance in one way or another. You'll need a decent number of these rare artifacts to obtain even 1 of those items, so it might actually be worth considering buying a Treasure Map if you don't know where to look so you can get as many of these as possible before you get funneled out of that part of the game for good. The special "Combination" Treasures like the Beerstein and Elegant Mask are still around, and will count as anywhere from 2 all the way up to 5 Rare Treasures in one, depending on how many of the pieces are fitted in. Oh... and if happen to go over the Price requirement with one of those treasures, the Merchant will apply a discount to the Next Rare Treasure Item you buy based on how much you went over. Krauser: Hoo boy... at the time this guy was introduced he quite literally came out of nowhere, and for some reason he and Leon had a history that none of us knew about until Capcom released that info to us later. He only ever shows up in 4, dies, and then we never see him again, so I decided to rewrite him from another agent working for Wesker who just happens to have a past with Leon, into Saddler's personal Body Guard and Right Hand man for getting **** done. Krauser as a result gets properly introduced to us at the same Saddler is, silently standing by the cult leader's side ready to strike down Luis and re-capture Ashley, but is unsuccessful when the 2 jump out a window. He then shows up later along with Saddler in the Castle in the same room Luis dies in the original game, instead forcing the Player into a Boss Fight if they're playing as Luis and forcing Ashley to go through that her section in the base game weaponless via disarming her and knocking her down to the lower level, all while Saddler departs with the Sample. His "QTE" Knife Fight much later in the game has been repurposed into a proper "Krauser 2" Boss Fight, where he disarms the Player before the fight begins, forcing them to face him man-to-man with Knives, while also being the 1st time he actually speaks to the Player. And of course, his "Cat and Mouse" encounter within the Ruins is still present, as by that point he's been tasked by Saddler to either Kill Luis or Subdue Ashley if they try to pass through, and where he meets his demise. QTES in General: They're being removed. In pretty much every case they showed up, they served as either an annoyance and/or a cheap death, why do you think I want the Krauser Knife fight to not be one anymore? Some obvious rewrites to how some cutscenes play out would have to be changed as a result, Salazar's Trap door as an example if the Player is Ashley Phase 2: Actual Gameplay. Guns: Keeping with Old School Resident Evil tradition, Luis and Ashley get different guns over the course of the game. Luis for instance starts off with a Llama M82 as his Handgun where as Ashley obtains a 6-shot Revolver in the same cabin you find the first enemy. Luis' guns would fall in line with Leon's loadout in the RE2: Remake. The Shotgun as, well... his Shotgun, the Killer 7 as his Magnum and the Rifle in place of the Flamethrower (Since RE4 has no Enemies apart from Mendez that are specifically weak to Fire. ) which also can be equipped with the Thermal Scope to give him an effective way to combat and kill Regenerators. Ashley's loadout by comparison would line up with Claire's. The Mine Thrower would be Ashley's stand in for the Grenade Launcher, the TMP as her Machine Gun and a Prototype version of the PRL Laser in place of the Spark Shot, which also would serve as Ashley's ideal Weapon of Choice against Regenerators. Also, just for kicks, the Blue Medallion Side-Quest is still around, and shooting at least 10 of them will prompt the Merchant to give them a New Handgun as a reward, Luis receives the Red9 while Ashley gets the Blacktail. Both have their own Attachments that can also be earned for Free if you shoot down all the Medallions. Alternate Routes: Since we've got control of 2 Playable characters this time around, as opposed to just 1, they'll each have to have some adjustments in terms of where they go throughout the game in order to keep their individual playthroughs feeling fresh and different. For example... when Mendez ambushes and knocks Luis and Ashley out at the end of Chapter 1-1, after they're injected with Las Plagas, Luis is sent to the Cabin at the end of the Valley where he is scheduled to be executed (They don't want to take any chances) where as Ashley is moved to the Church, but finds a way to break out on her own after waking up. From there... Luis' path basically mirrors Leon's in the Actual Game, with the little addition that he has a mini-boss fight against against the Ax Ganado, where as Ashley instead has to backtrack to the Farm and head out to the Cabin on the other side of the Large Gate (the place where the Cabin shootout happens in RE4 original, but this time we get to see it in Daytime) in order to obtain the "Arena Key" so she can pass through the door that leads to El Gigante's Area, as the door is locked in her scenario. Other alterations will pop up as the game continues, but I don't want to hold you guys here all day by listing them all. Unless you WANT me to... The Merchant is also introduced to them in different ways, after Luis kills his would be Executioner in the Cabin in the Valley, the Merchant greets him the same way he does to Leon. For Ashley, she runs into him as she heads through the underground pathway that connects the Village and the Church Graveyard. Ganados: The enemies of RE4, given how the control scheme is being changed to match RE2: Remake, these guys would be an absolute nightmare if they could still move and attack fast as well as spawn in large hordes, since you're not going to have Melee attacks here. As a result, they fall more in line with the RE6 Zombies minus the Leaping Grab, still able to move fast, can do a "Zombie Walk" to grab the player and can use Weapons, but are slower to swing said weapons. The Zealots would be a closer comparison to a Crimson Head, able to move and attack faster then normal Ganados, inflict more damage and take more shots before dying. Their Weakness compared to the sluggish Ganados will instead be a tendency to "Overswing" on their attacks, even if they hit you, they'll be left open for much longer then an average enemy, giving you more of a chance to fight back if you can evade their strikes. Finally... the Soldiers would basically be similar to the Zealots, but with the added twist that they can come equipped with guns, said guns are fired with an amateur's level of handling, at BEST. Their shots are often wild and erratic and will take them a second or two to properly line up the gun with the player, giving you time to either shoot them first or take cover. All of these enemies appear in smaller numbers, but are also harder to put down, often leading to quite a few bullets having to be emptied into their skulls and adding that extra decision of whether or not you should actually bother with trying to kill them. Knives: As you've probably already guessed... you don't have the 1 Knife, instead you found multiple Knives throughout the game or buy them from the Merchant. Like the Remake, these things can break and can also be used to escape a Grab unharmed while also dealing some damage to your attacker. Items: Unlike in RE4 Classic, Enemies and Boxes aren't Pinatas that carry money, ammo or health items anymore. Every item you obtain is one found in the open or in a desk, dresser and what have you, often in less supply, and with the limited inventory and the fact that you can't go back to certain areas after you pass a point of no return you'll really have to think about when and if you can take them. Difficulties: Sure, why not? How about I list the supposed difficulty modes for this not so little concept? Survival: The default difficulty. Saves are infinite, enemies have the normal amount of health, Knives have their regular Durability and dynamic difficulty will increase or decrease depending on the Player's performance throughout the game. Hardcore: The Hard/"Classic" difficulty. Saves require Ink ribbons, enemies are tankier and are more aggressive from the start, Knives have slightly lower durability and dynamic difficulty is in effect, but won't lower past a certain threshold. Professional: The Ultimate Test of the Player's skills. Saves require Ink Ribbons, the difficulty of all enemies is fixed to their "Max" difficulty and will never lower, the Durability of Knives are literally Half their normal toughness and there is NO Merchant, you're left with only the items you find to help you survive. His Gun Attachments that he'd normally sell to you are still present, but are instead locked behind special Optional Puzzles. The Blue Medallion Side Quest will still give you the Red9 or Blacktail, but instead of the Merchant giving it to you, they will appear in the Item Box the next time you open it. Note: There will NOT be a Mr X/Nemesis type enemy wandering about, RE4 never had one, so it wouldn't make sense to implement one just for the sake of it. And... I think that covers the majority of the "RE4: Remake" concept without devolving into ramblings. Like I said before... this is PURELY a Fan-made concept, I'm not actually crazy enough to waltz up to Capcom, apply for a job and then try to get this made. But if it was real... what would you think of it?
